Eduard von Borsody (born June 13, 1898 in Vienna ; † January 1, 1970 ibid) was an Austrian cameraman , film editor , film director and screenwriter of Hungarian origin.

Life and work

Eduard von Borsody was the son of the kuk court official Julius von Borsody and his wife Karoline nee Weber as well as the brother of the later film architect Julius von Borsody . After graduating from the military secondary school , he attended the kuk technical military academy . From 1916 to 1918 he served as an officer.

In 1919 he started filming as Willy Winterstein's assistant camera , and in 1921 he was the first to independently direct the camera in the fairy tale film The Brave Little Tailor . His first work included three films that Mihály Kertész directed for Sascha-Film in Vienna : the Schnitzler film adaptation “Der Junge Medardus” (1923), the love story “Fiaker No. 13” and the artist film “Der goldene Schmetterling” (both 1926). He later worked with such diverse directors as Carl Wilhelm , Ernő Metzner , Gustav Ucicky and Max Nosseck .

After switching to sound film , Ufa hired him as an editor. Eduard von Borsody continued to work frequently under Ucicky's direction and cut the Nazi propaganda filmsMorgenrot ” and “ Refugees ” for him . After his initial experience as an assistant director - also at Ucicky - and a series of short films, he directed and produced his first own feature film for Ufa in 1937: “Brillanten”. The main roles in this crime film were played by Hans Olden , Viktor Staal and Hansi Knoteck . In the same year he started the science fiction film project " Space Ship 18 ", which was later canceled due to the war. The next films also belonged to the action-oriented genres. " Kautschuk " (1938), with René Deltgen , Gustav Diessl and Vera von Langen , was an adventure film that tells the story of the Englishman Henry Wickham , who smuggled rubber seeds into England in 1876 in order to break the Brazilian monopoly. The film received the rating “State-politically and artistically valuable”. “Sensationsprozess Casilla” (1939), with Heinrich George , Jutta Freybe and Albert Hehn , is about child abduction. With " Kongo-Express " (also 1939), Eduard von Borsody again directed an adventure film in a tropical setting that attempted to build on the success of "Kautschuk". The main roles were played by Willy Birgel , Marianne Hoppe and again René Deltgen. And this time, too, the film architect Anton Weber was called in as a specialist for rather complicated tasks.

After the beginning of the Second World War, when there was a demand for cheerful films that showed the beautiful sides of life, Eduard von Borsody directed the love and music film " Wunschkonzert ", which became one of the most successful films of the entire Nazi era. Ilse Werner plays a young Berliner who loses contact with her bridegroom ( Carl Raddatz ), who was summoned to Spain on a secret mission. They both meet again later and get married. The film received the ratings "State-politically valuable", "Artistically valuable", "Popularly valuable" and "Youth value" and grossed 7.6 million Reichsmarks at the box office. Borsody's last film shot before the end of the war, the Gottfried Keller adaptation “Jugendliebe”, starring Rose Marten and John Pauls-Harding , fell victim to censorship and was only premiered in 1947.

After the end of the Second World War , Eduard von Borsody was able to continue his career without any problems despite the two propaganda films , while the leading actress Werner was temporarily banned from working. His two best-known post-war films followed a series of homeland films in 1956: the romantic comedy " Dany, please write ", with Sonja Ziemann and Rudolf Prack , and the colportage film " Liane, the girl from the jungle ", with which Eduard von Borsody returned to the exotic genre . His following film, “ Scandal um Dodo ” (1958), is only noteworthy because it was one of the first German-language post-war films with a colored leading actress.

Eduard von Borsody was married to Maria Hochreiter. He is the father of the actor Hans von Borsody and the grandfather of the actresses Suzanne von Borsody and Cosima von Borsody .

He was buried in the Hietzinger Friedhof (60-30-17) in Vienna.
