action

The story takes place in tsarist Russia. The young dancer Nastasja Daschenko lives in room number 217 in the prestigious Moscow Savoy Hotel. Right next door is a certain Sergei Shuvalov, with whom Nastasja shares a common past. The young hot spur had once murdered her husband in the hope of being able to conquer Nastasja for himself. For his bloody act, Shuvalov had to sit in a Siberian camp for many years. Nastasja is already married for the second time and also wants to get rid of this meanwhile unloved husband Fedor Daschenko, a merchant whose name she has adopted. The divorce is already in progress. Her heart now belongs to a new man: Andrei Wolodkin. He's the head waiter at the Savoy Hotel and also responsible for Natasja's floor. He is, as they say, “a real guy”. As a serious painter from head to toe, Andrej likes to tie up with many women and does not want to be tied to any one. Andrei once had an affair with the older Anna Orlowa, the caretaker, but it was only a love affair for him. Naturally Anna sees it very differently: she sees herself as his bride and hopes to be able to bind him to her with her fortune. But Andrej has already turned to a new flame, the chambermaid Darja Plagina. This is the starting point of the story.

When Andrej wants to go out with Darja, she is a little uncomfortable, as she suffers from the everyday problem with women that she supposedly has nothing to wear. Andrej then asks Nastasja to rummage through her bulging closet to see if there might be a dress for Darja there. Nastasja gives Darja one for free. Andrej and Darja have a nice evening, but after they both return, the young hotel employee is summoned to the head of personnel, as Anna claims that Darja stole 40 rubles from her. Allegedly Darja would have bought the new dress with it. Andrei then goes to Nastasja Daschenko and asks her to confirm that she gave Darja this dress. But Nastasja has her own plans for Andrei and refuses this request. Then Andrej gets angry, which leads to Nastasja just leaving him and disappearing into her boudoir. Then suddenly shots are fired: Nastasja is found murdered. Suspicion immediately falls on the two main suspects: Andrei and Shuvalov. But the police are powerless, they have no evidence of their suspicions.

Now that the main competitor has blessed the time, Anna does not give up and tried to persuade Andrej to marry her after all. He refuses. Anna runs away angrily and goes to the police to report on Andrei's argument with the murdered woman - the last time Nastasja was seen alive. In order to finally disavow Andrei, the jealous Anna invents a few statements that incriminate him. Now Andrei Wolodkin is arrested after all, and there is an appointment at the Savoy Hotel. At this moment the accused seizes the opportunity and piles up. Volodkin finds shelter in a shelter for the homeless, a night shelter, and meets Shuvalov and Nastasja's widower Daschenko there. While playing cards with the two of them, he discovers Nastasja's ring on Daschenko's hand, which only the murderer could have torn from the finger of the dead after her death. Daschenko initially denies, but finally admits the bloody act. Meanwhile, Darja got Anna to revise the false statements she had given to the police. In return, she promises Anna to leave the city and give up Andrei. But at the last moment Andrej storms over and confesses his love to Darja. Both stay together.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “After a promising, closed prelude, there are some lengths before the final events pull the plot up again. (...) Albers very excellent, the rest of them at some distance. Direction and presentation maintain the character of the time (pre-war Russia). "

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung wrote: “Hans Albers plays his role the way the audience loves it: he's a daredevil, a whole guy who doesn't let himself get down and forces himself to be lucky - as difficult as it may be. Nastasja found a spirited actress in Brigitte Horney. (...) Gustav Ucicky's direction has given the crime plot suspense "

“A UFA entertainment film tailored entirely to its stars with a criminalist element; of some interest only thanks to the acting achievements. "
