Until we see each other again (working title: Pamela ) is a German fiction film from 1952 directed by Gustav Ucicky . The dream couple from the 1950s, Maria Schell and O. W. Fischer, meet here for the first time .

action

In a hotel on the Swiss border, the young Pamela Osten meets the former casino owner Paul Mayhöfer. Through brief hints and Pamela's reaction to the reunion, her companion, Professor Stauffer, begins to suspect that Mayhöfer is playing a special role in the young woman's life.

Paul Mayhöfer had once helped Pamela out financially when she could not pay the transport workers hired to move. When she later asked him again for support to avert a seizure, he refused further help, however, unwillingly. A friend found Pamela a job as a mannequin at a fashion show that Paul and a friend also attended. When Mayhöfer asked about Pamela backstage and found out about her breakdown, he was worried, although at that point he didn't want to admit that he felt more for the delicate young woman. Pamela accepted his invitation to spend a few weeks with him on Lake Como in Italy, although Paul had made it clear to her before the start of the trip that any time was limited and that when the time came, they would part without any claims. The time at Lake Como was unusually beautiful for both of them. Just as Paul was looking forward to buying a special piece of jewelry for Pamela in town, his gaze fell out of the window on Pamela, who was sitting in an ice cream parlor with another man.

Back on "her" lonely island in the lake, when he asked Pamela whether she had spent the whole day in bed, what they had agreed to do, since the young woman had overexerted herself on a sailing trip the day before Answer, "yes", she promised him that. That Pamela had actually seen a doctor who confirmed that she was seriously ill with the lungs and had a chance of survival only with immediate treatment, and that the young man Paul had seen her with had only brought her to the mainland in his boat, kept Pamela to herself. She didn't want to burden him with that. Paul separated from Pamela, who then sought to be forgotten in a hectic bustle. When she collapsed after a wild dance, she met Professor Stauffer, who took care of her lovingly.

Paul was also in the hotel - unnoticed by Pamela - when she danced so wildly, but left early. When a comrade from the war days approached him shortly afterwards, as he had tried and refused in the past, about the system he had developed for influencing a roulette ball, Paul got involved with him.

Now - after some time has passed - Pamela sees Paul again in the hotel near the Swiss border. She is on her way to a sanatorium in Switzerland . Pamela heard on the car radio that the police wanted Paul for fraud . A debate ensues between the two of them, assuring each other that they have loved each other from the start.

Paul received help from the cloakroom at the hotel, Mrs. Wagner, who gave him the key to an unused room in the staff wing, where he should hide until the next morning. Mrs. Wagner is the mother of the man who first brought him into this situation. Paul is supposed to be transported across the border to Switzerland in an ambulance, the driver of which owes her a favor. Paul tells Pamela, who is happy to be able to spend the remaining time with the man she loves so much. It is only a short time until they finally see each other again.

In the attempt to escape, however, there is a chain of unfortunate circumstances. The police are on the trail of Mayhöfer's accomplice and accidentally stumble upon Paul himself. When he defies arrest by pretending to pull a gun, he is shot. A little later Pamela sees Paul being carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. She assumes that Paul's plan worked and smiles blissfully.

The shooting took place in July 1952 in Bellagio on Lake Como , in the Bad Homburg vor der Höhe gambling hall , in Guatemala City , in Slough , Berkshire in England , in Zweibrücken and in the Goettingen film studio . The film was produced by Roxy Film GmbH & Co. KG (Munich). The buildings were created by Hans Ledersteger and Ernst Richter , production management was taken over by producer Ludwig Waldleitner and Erwin Gitt .

Actually, Dieter Borsche , who had already played together with Maria Schell in two films ( There is a day coming and Dr. Holl ) , should also be her partner here again. The aim was to continue the extremely successful and lucrative film work with the “couple” loved by the audience. Dieter Borsche's wife Uschi prevented this, however. So the film couple Borsche / Schell was replaced by the dream couple Fischer / Schell. After the film was completed, the writer couple Sibelius / Keindorff sent their originally written script to the film critics in order to distance themselves from the filmed final version of the film. Originally outstanding in the eyes of Schell / Fischer screenplay was by the UFA - Veteran rewritten Gustav Ucicky, and Schell / Fischer criticized the quite openly. But their objections were not taken into account.

Gustav Ucicky was a typical representative of the Nazi propaganda UFA entertainment film 1933-45, a specialist in pathetic dramas with questionable ideology . Between 1933 and 1945 Ucicky was active alongside Veit Harlan and Karl Ritter as a particularly regime-compliant film director.

The film premiered on October 7, 1952 in the Capitol in Berlin . It started in Austria in December 1952.

criticism

In the film and fashion revue No. 16/1952, its columnist Sybille refers to the final scene of the film and then comes to the overall verdict: a scene of shocking, strong urgency! Until we meet again , a chamber play romance in a minor key, in which there are lively scenes of sublime serenity (for example a gorgeous waltz and exterior shots of Lake Maggiore ) alongside others, over which the melancholy magic of resignation lies like deadly hoop, promises to be a film from the Sunday box: a film for those who are always ready to recognize the rolling celluloid tape as an art form. In addition, a melting tenor sings: “Tonight - at the blue lagoon! Tonight - I will wait in the moonlight! Oh come to the blue lagoon! I want to confess to you how my heart weeps for you ... "

Another critic wrote: "Maria Schell's touching face, her persistent Madonna smile and her fragile figure, already exposed to consumption for the second time in German films, is delightful to look at." Still, the audience fell through until we meet again . One of the few flops from Luggi Waldleitner's Roxy film.
