A Life for Do is a 1953 German melodrama by Gustav Ucicky with Hans Söhnker in the male lead and the film debutante Paola Loew in the title role. The film is based on the novel " Daddy and Do " by Robert Pilchowski .

action

Little Do grows up on a farm in southern Africa. Planter Thomas, a seasoned middle-aged man, is the owner of the property and is idolized by Do. Too bad that Thomas is the girl's father - at least that's how she was always told. Dos exuberant, enthusiastic teenage love reaches proportions - including fits of jealousy - that Thomas thinks is rather bad, so he sends the girl to relatives in Switzerland for her further education. Here Do should first finish her school and gain distance. Only after ten years do they see each other again. Thomas has married in the meantime, and the child Do has become an attractive young lady.

Do learns from Thomas' wife Vivian that Thomas is not her biological father, but rather her foster father. Now all emotional dams are finally breaking, because the spatial and temporal distance did not cause Do to fall out of love with Thomas again. Even the planter no longer has the willpower to seek the distance to Do and gives himself over to his feelings towards her. Instinctively, however, he thinks it is better to leave and therefore returns to his farm in South Africa. One day, Do finds out indirectly that her sugar daddy has divorced, so that she finally has a free run. With the next ship, Do travels to Africa after her beloved Thomas, only to sink into his arms.

Reviews

In its edition of February 3, 1954, Der Spiegel found: “Uncomfortable father-daughter eroticism, based on the" Constanze "novel of the same name, wrapped miserably in expensive and beautiful outdoor shots (Switzerland and Africa) by director Gustav Ucicky. Even as a fat eleven-year-old (Heidi Becker), but especially as a full-grown girl, Do (robust and ladylike: Paola Loew) loves her "daddy", the German planter in Africa (Hans Söhnker), with a hectic glow that banishes other men, even though she is only shortly before the happy solution finds out that she is only this daddy's foster daughter. "

"Conventional, sentimental love drama - professionally done, but a bit lengthy."
