Alexander Engel (actor)
Alexander Engel , actually Kurt Ludwig Wilhelm Engel , (born June 4, 1902 in Berlin , † July 25, 1968 in Saarbrücken ) was a German actor and director . He adopted the stage name "Alexander" to avoid confusion with the musician Kurt Engel, who was popular at the same time .
Life
Alexander Engel was born as the son of the linen tailor Richard Engel and his wife Helene. Heinrich was born in his parents' apartment at Mehnerstraße 3 (today around Mollstraße 20). He received his acting training at the Reichersche Hochschule für Dramatic Kunst in Berlin. From 1923 he was on the stages in Allenstein , Königsberg and Rostock . His brother Rudolf Engel was temporarily chairman of the DEFA board and fought as a resistance fighter against National Socialism.
In 1931 he came to Berlin and played at the Renaissance Theater and the Theater am Kurfürstendamm , among others . He got his first feature film role in 1932 as the office servant Fritz in Hasenklein, can't help it . On stage and in film, he often embodied bizarre characters in supporting roles. Most recently he appeared in some Edgar Wallace films as a mysterious doctor or clergyman.
Alexander Engel died on July 25, 1968 at the age of 66 in Saarbrücken after suddenly collapsing in the studio while recording a radio play . He was buried in Berlin, on the state's own cemetery in Heerstraße in what is now the Westend district (field II-Ur 3-161). The grave site was re-allocated in August 2008 after 40 years of use and can therefore no longer be visited.
His written estate is in the archive of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
