One too many on board is a film drama by the director Gerhard Lamprecht from 1935. The literary film adaptation is based on the novel of the same name by the writer Fred Andreas , who also worked on the script . In the main role , Albrecht Schoenhals plays the captain of the cargo ship Cedar , von Moltmann, who cannot be found after a storm on the high seas and is reported missing.

Prosecutor Burger starts an investigation together with Inspector Sörensen when he learns that Captain von Moltmann was apparently washed off board his cargo ship Cedar during a storm and can no longer be found. Although the circumstances speak for a fatal accident, Burger does not rule out a murder either, as he learns in the course of his investigation that there was a dispute and a desire for revenge on board between the captain and members of the ship's crew.

In the further course of the investigation it becomes apparent that the first officer Rohlfs was hostile towards the captain, as he had reason to suspect that von Moltmann had a relationship with his fiancée Gerda Hegert. There is also the suspicion that the chief engineer Sparkuhl also had a reason to harbor feelings of hatred towards the captain: He saw in the captain a seducer of his niece, who couldn't cope with the captain's request and therefore committed suicide.

At the end of the public prosecutor's and police investigations and after evaluating the evidence, a court in Hamburg ruled that the captain von Moltmann went overboard through no fault of the crew and due to a tragic accident during a storm; The court considers third-party negligence to be excluded and declares the case to be over. After the verdict, Gerda Hegert explains that an affair with von Moltmann once existed, but had long since been forgotten.

The first engineer Sparkuhl regrets that he exposed false suspicions from Moltmann. His false suspicions weigh on him so much that he shoots himself with a pistol.

Towards the end of the film, the plot takes a surprising turn when von Moltmann reports to Gerda with a telegram . In it he announces that he was washed overboard, but is still alive and on the way to his home port.

The film premiered on October 31, 1935 in the Gloria Palast in Berlin . Further publication dates (abroad) were January 10, 1936 in the Netherlands (there under the title Eén teveel aan boord ), January 24, 1936 in the USA (there under the title One Too Many on Board ), April 11 1936 in Denmark (there under the title Mand over Bord ) and May 4, 1936 in Sweden (there under the title Kapten över bord ). The location was Hamburg , the shooting took place there in June and July 1935.

Walter Pindter and Hans Georg Fehdmer assisted Robert Baberske with the camera work, Hans Sohnle and Otto Erdmann were responsible for the scenery and Heinz Ritter photographed the set .

Erich Holder supported Bruno Duday with the production.

Others

The Nazi regime checked the film for any content that might be detrimental to the regime and, with resolution B.40388, imposed a youth ban on it on October 7, 1935 as part of the film censorship customary at the time .
