action

Felix Rabe is a small employee in a hairdressing salon. He invented a hair restorer which he is testing on General Manager Kartzer and which so far seems ineffective. One day he receives a letter from the district court: his aunt Caroline has died and made him a universal heir. Felix leaves the hairdressing salon and Elfie, an employee who loves him, and drives into town. Caroline's apartment is empty except for a self-portrait and 13 Biedermeier chairs. Felix moves the chairs to the antique dealer Tobby Zektiven, who himself is in financial difficulties. Because he has not paid his rent for a long time, the landlord sent the young Helga Müller over to him to collect the outstanding money. Otherwise there is a risk of termination.

The next morning, Felix resignedly packs his things and also takes the portrait of Aunt Caroline. There is a letter in the frame in which she informs him that the inheritance of 100,000 marks is hidden in one of the chairs. But Tobby has been able to sell them in the meantime. Felix promises him 20% of the total if he helps him find it. The two of them now go to the various chair buyers. At wrestler Oskar Wuttke's they find two chairs, but no money in them, they discover two more chairs in a barracks, where they pretend to be inspectors, but don't find any money here either. In the Karstadt department store they imitate mannequins in order to be able to cut open another chair. The search continues to find a mother of six, with whom Tobby steps in as a nanny and cuts open two more chairs. Both of them have to save a chair for later, as it will be auctioned in two days. In a dance school they find another chair and disrupt a performance in the theater so that they can search through the chair in the stage decoration. In a mental hospital, they destroy three chairs and are therefore locked in a padded cell because they are mentally suspicious . Only Helga can free both of them on the day of the auction.

At the auction, Felix and Tobby accidentally bought a Fortuna figure rather than the chair. The chair belongs to Dr. Kalmus who doesn't want to give it up. So Tobby sneaks into his office and throws the chair out of the window. Felix was supposed to be standing in front of the window, but he fled from Otto Wuttke, who suddenly appeared. The chair ends up in a van that is collecting donations for the city's orphanage. In the evening, Felix and Tobby suspect that the other will bring the chair. In the end, the two part in anger, because Tobby believes Felix is trying to cheat him of his share. Only Helga hears on the radio that the orphanage received 100,000 marks in a chair from an unknown benefactor. Felix and Tobby rush to the orphanage to clear up the mistake, but there they witness how the deeply moved director of the home thanks the unknown benefactor. Both of them therefore return home empty-handed. First they realize that all four of them have nothing: Tobby has to close his shop, Helga was fired because she couldn't get the rent, Felix is broke and Elfie has quit the hairdressing salon. The two couples decide to stay together. General Manager Kartzer appears with full head of hair. Felix's hair restorer is effective and so the four of them found the hair restorer AG Rabe und Zimmern and are now rich and happy people.
