action

The self-confident export merchant Otto Polsterer takes an overnight break in a Munich hotel on the journey with his Cadillac to Lake Wörthersee. His daughter Anja is there, but she would rather be with her great love Jonny. Here Mr. Polsterer gets the message that his presence in the company is necessary because of a large million dollar business. That calls for new decisions and he decides to have the owner of the gas station opposite, Gustl Kränzlein, bring his daughter to her final destination in Velden am Wörthersee. Anja is still instructed by him that she has to report daily. So he can sit safely on the plane to Hamburg. Of course, he has no idea that everything will turn out very differently.

At the same time, Gustl received a visit from his nephew, the always somewhat clammy engineer Manfred Böttcher. He is on the road with his two friends, the shy and enthusiastic Karl Munk and the always joking representative Gerhard Rohne with an old, good car plus a rented caravan for a fun bachelor's holiday. At the suggestion of resolute mother Kränzlein, the next morning, instead of Gustl, young Manfred is at the wheel of the Cadillac to pick up "the child" from the hotel across the street. His astonishment is enormous when he sees a young, beautiful woman. His confusion would probably have been even greater if he had known that the real Anja is on her way to see her loved one and was represented by the operator Brigitte Mansfeld, who has just been dismissed from the hotel services.

Meanwhile, Karl and Gerhard decide to stay on the heels of the Cadillac, since Manfred did not keep their resolution not to look for pretty girls while on vacation. Finally, they achieve that you spend the rest of the way together. After Brigitte, as Anja, sends the first mandatory telegram from Salzburg to Mr. Polsterer, they have to spend the night at Fuschlsee due to a "breakdown". While Brigitte sleeps in the trailer, the three friends camp next to it, keeping awake. The next morning, Manfred is astonished to find that there is “suddenly” petrol again, and the journey continues. Shortly before St. Wolfgang they meet Anja, who has since found out that her Jonny is married. In order not to let the lie fly, she has no choice but to continue the journey as Brigitte Mansfeld. While Karl has already discovered his heart for the real Brigitte, Manfred defends himself against his feelings for this “reckless, strange car stopping Brigitte, who is actually Anja”. He treats them accordingly harshly. During a peasant wedding in Heiligenblut, Gerhard, whom every pretty girl likes, almost sticks to the Kranzljungfer Marianne. Because according to an old tradition, the invitation of a wreath maid to dance is tantamount to a marriage proposal. After some other turbulence, the five finally manage to arrive in Velden am Wörthersee and Manfred delivers “Anja” to the castle hotel, much to Karl's chagrin. Out of affection he takes the real Anja to the campsite so as not to expose her to the "dangers of the country road". When father upholsterer and uncle Kränzlein arrive at Lake Wörthersee, the happy ending can no longer be stopped and Gerhard can finally fight off the Kranzljungfer.

production

When Franz Antel was looking for the third leading actor alongside the already committed Peter Pasetti and Rudolf Platte, he remembered Peter Alexander, who had sung the opening song in The Sweetest Fruits together with the also unnamed Leila Negra . But Waldfried Barthel , the head of the Constantin rental , initially rejected the unknown actor. Only when Antel had the powerful names Hans Moser and Oskar Sima under contract did Barthel give his permission. As Alexander was on vacation in Italy in an unknown location shortly before filming began, Antel had the Interpol branch in Vienna look for him, which he and his wife Hilde discovered in Grado . Alexander feared that he would only be allowed to sing a song in the film, but was persuaded by his wife to break off the vacation. For Peter Alexander it was the first leading role in a film.

The film studio in Salzburg-Parsch served as a studio. The outdoor shots were shot in Munich , Salzburg , on Fuschl , Wolfgang and Wörthersee , as well as in the Großglockner area. The film was produced in Austria and had its world premiere under the title Summer in Love in Vienna on December 31, 1954. In Germany it was then called People in Love and the premiere took place on January 27, 1955. The film ran on German television for the first time on August 16, 1961, with the announcement “Lovers in love”.
