Waldfried Barthel (born October 23, 1913 ; † August 11, 1979 in Munich ) was a German film entrepreneur and diplomat.

Life

On April 1, 1950 founded Barthel with the Danish film businessman Preben Philipsen in Frankfurt the Constantin Film Distribution . This was named after Preben Philipsen's father Constantin Philipsen , the founder of Rialto Film . In 1955 Philipsen left. Instead, Barthel's wife Ingeborg was managing director of Constantin from 1955 to 1960 alongside her husband. In 1957 the headquarters of Constantin were relocated to Munich .

Barthel, known as “the Consul”, played a key role in the great success of Constantin Film in the 1950s and 1960s, especially the popular Edgar Wallace films and Karl May films . He awarded commissioned productions to various film producers and thus took on considerable risks in financing the individual projects.

On July 1, 1965, he sold 60% of the company's shares to Reinhard Mohn's Bertelsmann group . In addition to him, Manfred Köhnlechner and Herbert Schmidt, also for Bertelsmann, acted as the Bertelsmann representative. After the share capital had been increased to nine million DM at the shareholders' meeting on December 6, 1968, Bertelsmann decided in 1970 to sell the shares again. On January 1, 1971, Barthel bought back all the shares on the advice of his closest employees. This turned out to be a mistake, so that in 1974 he had to sell 50% of the shares in 1975 and finally on January 1, 1976 all remaining shares in Constantin to the Hagen construction speculator Hellmuth Gierse.

Barthel was Honorary Consul of Panama and since 1971 Consul General . After his death he was buried in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen cemetery.
