Constantin Philipsen

Lauritz Carl Constantin Philipsen (born December 1, 1859 in Copenhagen ; † August 23, 1925 there ) was a Danish cinema operator , film producer and film director . Constantin Filmverleih , co-founded by his son Preben Philipsen , is named after him.

Life

Philipsen was the son of the photographer Emilius Ludvig Philipsen (1834-1896) and Frederikke Sophie Petersen (1847-1909). He initially completed the same training as his father. Then he worked at the theater in Copenhagen. From 1880 he traveled to the United States . After returning to Copenhagen, he mainly worked as a theater photographer. In 1897 he founded the Danish Rialto Film in Copenhagen , whose former subsidiary is today's German company. In September 1904 Philipsen established the Kosmorama in Copenhagen, the first cinema that showed films every day. Numerous other cinemas followed in other Danish cities. In 1912 he opened the Palads Teatret in the vacant building of the former Copenhagen Central Station , which at the time of opening was the largest cinema in Northern Europe.

He produced various films, some of which he also worked as a director or behind the camera.

His son Preben Philipsen emerged from his marriage to Marie Helene Philipsen (née Elster; 1882–1954) .
