The Palads Teater was originally located in the former Copenhagen Central Station on Axeltorv . When this stood empty after the opening of the new main station on December 1, 1911, Constantin Philipsen obtained the right to set up a cinema there for three years. In the winter of 1911/1912, when it was vacant, the building was also used to accommodate the homeless. In order to convert the station building into a cinema, it was almost completely gutted and the entrances to the station hall and some of the doors and windows to it walled up. The cinema opened on October 18, 1912 with the film The General's Children with Asta Nielsen in the lead role. The cinema had 3,000 seats and an approximately 30-strong orchestra and at the time it opened, it was the largest cinema in Northern Europe.

After Constantin Philipsen fell ill in 1915 and the lease contract expired, the cinema in the train station was closed in 1916. The old building was then completely demolished by 1917 to make room for a new building.

In the same year, a new Palads Teater began to be built on Axeltorv, which was completed by January 25, 1918. This was designed by the architects Andreas Clemmensen (1852–1928) and Johan Nielsen (1863–1952). Since then, Kai Nielsen's work Ursus med tyren has been on the roof , but it was only gilded in 1949.

On January 26, 1918, the cinema, now under the direction of Sophus Madsen, was inaugurated by Victor Sjöström with the film Berg-Eyvind and his wife . After Jacob Gade led the orchestra for the premiere of The Birth of a Nation in the Palads on March 22, 1918 , he was orchestra director of the cinema from 1921. On the occasion of the premiere of The Man with the Whip on October 4, 1925, he presented his Tango Venetian blind for the first time .

In 1926 Carl Bauder bought the cinema, which has since been part of Nordisk Film . Since March 4, 1929, the cinema had the possibility of showing speech films. In 1955, the wide-screen format was introduced in the Palads Teatret using the anamorphic method (Cinemascope).

It was here that Nordisk Films Kompagni celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, on November 6, 1956, with the premiere of Qivitoq .

The Danish feature film The Olsen Gang Runs Amok not only premiered on October 5, 1973 in the Palads, but the cinema was also the setting for the film. The protagonist Egon Olsen flees there after a failed break-in by the Olsen gang in the Palads, to the roof of the cinema building, where he is finally arrested. Other films from this series of Olsen Gang films, which were popular in Denmark at the time and which were made between 1968 and 1999, had their premiere at the Palad Teatret and were mostly characterized by high visitor numbers.

The building has been renovated several times. Due to the declining number of visitors, it was decided in the 1970s to extensively renovate the cinema and convert it to a multiplex . In this context, the largest renovation took place in 1978, when it was decided to divide the cinema with 1519 seats and an average occupancy of 15.5% per performance into several smaller, 12 halls. This measure achieved the desired success, the number of visitors rose again due to the increased selection of films.

In 1989, Poul Gernes was responsible for the new color scheme of the building. The cinema historian Thomas Hauerslev describes it as stort bolche , big candy. In 1993 Digital Sound and Dolby Digital were introduced at Palads Cinema .

For the premiere of the film The (Really) Very Last Prank of the Olsen Gang , the "Café Olsen Gang" was set up on the ground floor of the cinema in 1998. This was equipped with cinematic props and museum exhibits related to the Danish film series on the Olsen Gang and existed until October 2010. After the subsequent conversion of the cinema, it was converted into a modern café with a size of around 140 m². Some of the former exhibits were brought to Nordisk Film in Valby and a larger part was integrated into a newly created, smaller exhibition on the first floor on topics related to Danish film. Also in 2010 the foyer of the cinema was modernized and a new staircase was installed, as well as two-sided ticket sales.

According to current urban planning, the Palads is to be demolished. The owner of the property, the Danish state railway DSB , would like to erect several buildings and high-rise buildings on the property and the adjacent former railway site. The technical and environmental mayor Morten Kabell of Copenhagen has already signaled his approval of the plans, as well as the owner of the Nordisk Film Biograferne ( Nordisk Film Kinogesellschaft ) building, according to its director, as they will get a “new, larger and more modern cinema” instead of the Palad would. The Palads Teatret is not a listed building. Public protests against the demolition and the new development plans have formed from the population and, among other things, demonstrations for the preservation of the cinema have been announced.

Furnishing

Since the beginning of 2012, viewers have been able to see all films in the digital format 3D films in RealD . The Palads Teater now has 17 halls, from rooms with 50 seats to the hall on the first floor with space for 690 people. 25 to 30 different films are shown weekly in the cinema premises (as of 2013).
