Alan Scott Newman (born September 23, 1950 in Cleveland , Ohio , † November 20, 1978 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor and stuntman. He was the son of the actor Paul Newman .

Life

Scott Newman was the eldest child of Paul Newman and his first wife Jackie Witte. As a young child, he moved to New York City with his two younger sisters, Susan and Stephanie . In 1958 his parents divorced, Paul Newman married Joanne Woodward and they moved on to Westport , Connecticut . He attended Staples High School there and graduated from high school. He later went to expensive private schools, but was dismissed there for bad behavior. In the late 1960s, he dropped out of school and began working as a stuntman in his father's films. He had his first role in 1974 in the disaster film Flammendes Inferno as a young firefighter, in which his father played one of the two main roles alongside Steve McQueen . A year later he took on a small role in Reckless Fliers , for which Paul paid him $ 1,000. During 1975 he made several appearances on television series such as Dr. Marcus Welby , Harry O or The Bad Five , as well as in the Western Nevada Pass with Charles Bronson . He was last seen in 1977 in The College Gang .

In the fall of 1978, Newman had a serious motorcycle accident. He took pain medication to ease the symptoms of his injury. He also took advantage of psychiatric help financed by his father. On the night of November 19-20, 1978, he swallowed an overdose of Valium along with other drugs , including alcohol. Scott Steinberg, one of his guardians, called an ambulance. When they arrived, the paramedics could only find Newman's death. Paul Newman later stated, “It was the saddest day of my life. The memory of it can never be erased. "

After Scott's death, Paul Newman founded the Scott Newman Center , an institution for the prevention of substance abuse.
