action

The academic painter Walter Pichler has a problem; his uncle Vinzenz Grillmayer financed his studies for years and he believes that Walter studied medicine. Now Grillmayer invites the supposedly freshly graduated Walter to his hotel in St. Wolfgang. Walter was forced to accept, but took his best friend Peter Kurz with him. He in turn actually studied medicine and has just successfully completed his doctorate. Both put together a strategy to gently confess the truth to their uncle. When they arrive, they cannot clear up the misunderstanding. Especially since Grillmayer is now trying very hard to bring Walter to patients without having asked him. One night Grillmayer got Walter out of bed because young Trixi was said to be terminally ill. Walter takes her out into the fresh air and she soon feels better. Walter's skill is now on everyone's lips. The trigger for Trixi's weakness was a telegram informing her of the arrival of her fiancé Dr. Egon Rittersheim announced. He is a lawyer and much older than Trixi. She doesn't like him, but her mother loves him; she also got the two of them engaged. Walter falls in love with Trixi and is no longer in a hurry to give up the role of doctor, especially since Trixi pretends to be weak in front of Egon in order to get rid of him.

When he's not giving simple advice on harmless diseases, Walter is painting an advertising poster for holidays in Austria. It is said to be his contribution to a tourism promotion competition, the victory of which would bring him 5,000 schillings. Soon he had the idea to draw Trixi in front of the panorama of St. Wolfgang. Peter soon had to pretend to be a painter to Grillmayer and he got into a quandary when the esoteric Anny Bird absolutely wanted to model the artist. When a guest falls ill, Grillmayer urges Walter to examine him. In the meantime, Egon has become suspicious, especially since his fiancée spends a lot of time with the supposed doctor. He has a doctor brought from town to examine the hotel guest. Peter pretends to be sick with a trick and prompts Walter both his symptoms and the treatment that has already taken place. The doctor is satisfied with the treatment, but Egon does not give up. He telegraphs to the University of Vienna and asks whether Walter was ever enrolled.

Meanwhile, Grillmayer initiates a mountain hike that leads to numerous colds after a storm. Especially the young Susanne Thomas, with whom Peter fell in love, was hit hard. Although Walter is called for treatment again, Peter steps in, as it is no longer fun. He treats Susanne and admits that he is the doctor and Walter the painter. The situation comes to a head when Peter's fellow student Marion Hanisch shows up in St. Wolfgang. Meanwhile, Egon reports to Walter and Grillmayer about a con man who was arrested for pretending to be a doctor. Walter has enough and he leaves unnoticed. Marion appears at the hotel shortly afterwards and congratulates Grillmayer: Walter won first prize in the poster competition. At first irritated, Grillmayer is pleased that he has such a successful nephew. Egon receives telegram information that Walter never studied medicine. He reports Walter to the police. The hotel guests also learn of the hoax, but they have to admit that Walter never claimed to be a doctor himself. Only they themselves have always referred to him as such. Grillmayer, in turn, now says that Walter only wanted to paint incognito on site and pretended to be a doctor. He had received the actual medical advice from Peter, whom he had taken with him as a cover. Egon appears with the policeman, but he can't find a crime. Trixi and Peter drive after Walter and get him off the train. The three of them drive back to the hotel, where they are greeted with jubilation. Walter finds out about his first prize. A little later Walter and Trixi get engaged and Grillmayer now persuades his guests to let Walter paint them in oil.
