action

The Strux family has constant money problems: Mother Ilse is a model for her husband, who tries his hand at being a modern painter, and daughter Eva plays the piano in an existentialist café run by the exaggerated Madeleine. Every month the family waits for a check from their rich aunt Emilia to help them pay the rent. With the new check, the family also receives the message that Emilia is coming to visit from far-off South America and will arrive on the same day. The Struxens hurriedly rearrange their artist apartment and transform it into a sophisticated apartment. However, a much bigger problem than the high lifestyle that has been pretended for years is the 20-year-old daughter Eva. She was born when Ilse and Gabriel were still married. In order not to anger their moral aunt, both of them announced Eva's existence only after the marriage, which is why she should theoretically only be 11 years old. Since Eva hardly has any feminine curves, she is simply put into a girl's dress and passed off as a child.

Aunt Emilia also has a secret. She met and fell in love with the circus director Pedro in South America and they both got married. They run the Apollo Galotti Circus, the largest traveling circus in the world, to which both owe their wealth. Since Emilia suspects strict relatives in her family, she is now also an elegant lady and forces Pedro into a suit. The first meeting is full of joy and white lies; Emilia thinks her husband earns the money in exports and imports. Eva convinces as a child, receives sweets and toys and soon hurries to her café, where she plays the piano.

In order to provide for Eva, Emilia plans to take her to her “12. Birthday "to give a check for $ 20,000 to be redeemed on their 21st birthday. Although the family intended to confess everything to Emilia, they now want to keep the masquerade going a little longer, as Eva's 21st birthday is already in two days. Until then, there have been numerous incidents. Eva goes to a department store with Emilia and practices a jazz song on the piano in a child's dress, which is why the employee Paul Wiesinger thinks she is a child prodigy. When he later sees Eva playing "normally" in the café, she says that she has a little sister that Paul absolutely wants to have an attraction in the department store the next day. Eva agrees with necessity. Eva and her father go to a café where they both smoke and drink and a woman from the youth welfare office notices that she is at risk for the child's welfare. At a ball game, Eva disguised as a child a meeting between Paul, with whom she fell in love, and his admirer Nadine, who smeared whipped cream on her dress, for which she received a slap in the face. This in turn enrags the woman from the youth welfare office and she announces the consequences. Meanwhile, the Strux family find out that Pedro and Emilia are circus owners. However, because of the $ 20,000, they cannot unravel their secret.

On her birthday, Eva first has to go to the circus with Pedro because he wants to turn her into an artist. Because her girl's dress is stolen by a circus elephant and thrown into the lion cage, Eva is late for her appearance in the department store, where she appears in a normal dress and at first pretends to be the big sister to Paul. When Paul's boss threatens to dismiss him because of the embarrassment of the missed appearance, Eva finally discovers her double life. She dresses up as a child and plays in front of the delighted audience. Meanwhile, Pedro is heartbroken, believing that a lion has eaten Eve. She appears at home shortly afterwards and everyone is happy. Paul also comes and has a present for everyone, including a new dress for Eva. The woman from the youth welfare office turns up to take Eva away from the family. Like Emilia, she is confused when Eva stands before her as an adult. Emilia now wants to take back the $ 20,000, but learns from Pedro that he has long since invested her fortune in the circus. A great reconciliation takes place and Eva, Ilse, Gabriel, the housemaid Cleopatra and Eva's fiancé Paul become part of the big circus family.

production

The film was produced in the Thalerhof studio in Graz. The outdoor shots were made in Vienna (Circus Apollo) as well as in Graz and the surrounding area. The first film to which composer Erwin Halletz contributed the music was a great fruit . The film constructions came from Sepp Rothauer . The film premiered on October 2, 1953 simultaneously in Pforzheim and in the Mannheimer Kammerspiele.

The film is not a remake of the Austrian film Csibi, der Fratz (1934, also in Germany as a fruit in cinemas), but deals with a very similar topic.

criticism

The film service found that a great fruit was a "clumsy swank" with situation comedy, "which is difficult to undercut in terms of its level."
