action

Ferdinand Bauer is a widower and father of Franzi, Fanny and medical student Fritzi. He is the owner of the Bauer women's salon and is considered a bon vivant and understanding woman in society. Every day he goes to receptions on the instructions of the silent partner Zirrhübel, can be seen at balls and parties and thus increases the reputation of the Bauer family. Only his daughters suffer from the constantly absent father who usually comes home drunk the next morning, but can always appease his children with rich gifts of money. Even accountant Mizzi Hanak that Ferdinand secretly loves, is silent as long as the antics of the bosses are good for business. Ferdinand, on the other hand, would love to go on vacation one day, but changed his mind when the famous dancer Yvonne Farini finally appeared as a customer in his shop after long courtship.

Yvonne Farini has Ferdinand tailor an evening dress and he is carried away by the beautiful woman. The famous clientele is causing sales in the women's salon to skyrocket. At the same time, the Ménage à trois is a topic of conversation in the city: Not only Ferdinand but also the wealthy Sandor Gyöngyoshazy vies for Yvonne. Both men give the dancer more and more valuable gifts and she lets them both fidget. Mizzi, in turn, begins to warn that the expenses have now exceeded the salon's income. Ferdinand realizes that things cannot go on like this and spontaneously cancels a meeting with Yvonne. Instead he goes with Mizzi to a Pratercafé, where Yvonne and Sandor promptly appear. She invites Ferdinand to a ball where she will wear his new dress, and Ferdinand forgets all good resolutions. Mizzi wants to quit the next day because she no longer wants to take responsibility for the Bauer books. Ferdinand opts for a radical break: he gives the ladies' salon as a gift to his daughters.

In the period that followed, the women's salon rapidly went downhill. Ferdinand's daughters cannot run the farm and have money withdrawn from the cash register at random. The customers stay away because they are no longer advised by the charming Ferdinand. Since he has also withdrawn from the public, there is no advertising for the business. Zirrhübel tries to follow in Ferdinand's bon vivant footsteps, but has to learn to dance with great effort and does not have Ferdinand's charm either. One day Yvonne appears at Ferdinand's and invites him to her new program. He cancels, but secretly sneaks out of the house in the evening. At Yvonne's cloakroom door he hears Yvonne flirting with Sandor. She tells him that Ferdinand poses no threat to him because he is only a tailor. Ferdinand returns home disillusioned and spends the night on the business books. Only now does he realize his daughters' mismanagement and he wants to reverse the donation the next day. The daughters refuse to give up the business, as he himself has shown that he is just as incapable of doing business, and Ferdinand is shaken. There is soon no further discussion because the business is insolvent as a result of a stock market crash . The shop will be auctioned along with the furnishings. Unnoticed by Ferdinand, Mizzi buys part of the furnishings and opens a new fashion shop not far from the old Bauer women's salon. It is Zirrhübel who leads Ferdinand to his new shop, whose employees now include the long-time tailor Pschistranek as well as the daughters Fritzi, Fanny and Franzi. You have already received your first orders and soon the first customer will come into the shop and be immediately taken with Ferdinand's charm. Ferdinand becomes engaged to Mizzi shortly afterwards, while Fritzi finds a future husband in the wealthy beer brewer Josef Brandner.

production

The old sinner is based on Martin Costa's play of the same name. It was the first piece with which Paul Hörbiger came on a post-war tour to Germany after the end of the Second World War ; like in the film, he took on the role of Ferdinand.

The film was produced in Sievering in the local film studios, the outdoor shots were made in Vienna and the surrounding area. The Filmbauten come from Felix Smetana , the costumes created Gerdago . The film had its German premiere on March 8, 1951. Maria Andergast and Paul Hörbiger sing in the film the song Yes you can not do anything that is already tuned . Paul Hörbiger can also be heard with the song The Old Sinner .
