The bell is calling is an Austrian comedy film from 1960 by Franz Antel . The main roles are played by Hans Holt and Annie Rosar .

action

Pastor Stadler from St. Justin parish gets into some trouble with the villagers. The open-minded and modern man of God came up with the idea of tapping into the donation fund for the purchase of a new organ in order to use the money to anonymously distribute charitable gifts to needy fellow citizens. To him, this not entirely legal path seems to be a sensible way of working both Christian and merciful. But that calls the astute cinema operator August Ehrlich, the most powerful man in the village, who does not always live up to his name.

Ehrlich thinks that these “miracles” performed on those in need should be exploited in some way. And so the rumor about the miraculous Mother of God who makes lived mercy possible soon spreads. Ehrlich soon drives the "miracle" hype to extremes, and when Stadler no longer wants to take part in this show circus, his own sheep, again led by Ehrlich, turn against him. The cinema owner even has the audacity to report Pastor Stadler and to put up an advertising board in front of the church portal. Stadler is fed up and is starting to teach his community a lesson ...

Production notes

After the failure of Der Schatz vom Toplitzsee , Franz Antel decided to shoot another Heimatfilm with his tried and tested team, although the era of conventional Heimatfilms was clearly coming to an end. In search of a new face for the youthful lead role, he turned to the Max Reinhardt Seminar . Since Senta Berger, who was his favorite and was not yet of legal age , was refused acceptance by her father and Marisa Mell was just shooting her first film, Antel engaged Christine Buchegger.

Paul Löwinger recommended Antel as the second production manager, one of his employees, who had served him well on his tours. For Karl Spiehs , his involvement as an unnamed co-production manager meant entering the film business. The film was shot on the Tauplitzalm . Spiehs can be seen in the film as a dumb drinker at the bar.

The bell calls was filmed under the title Glocken der Heimat and premiered on September 30, 1960 under the title Bells ringing all over Austria. On October 20, 1960, the film ran under the title The bell calls in Germany.

Reviews

"Pathetic kitsch, outwardly respectable, but often embarrassing in the interweaving of religious elements with the ingredients of cheap comedy and homeland films."

Paimann's film lists summed up: "A fable that does not disdain the gimmicky inclusion of the religious, partly emotional, partly comic."
