Generalitat Valenciana

The Generalitat Valenciana ( Spanish Generalidad Valenciana ) is the entirety of the political institutions that exercise political self-government in the Region of Valencia ( Comunitat Valenciana ). Since the constitutional reform in 2006, the official name has been simply Generalitat .

history

The Generalitat of Valencia, like the Generalitat de Catalunya in Catalonia , goes back to the permanent councils which, since the Middle Ages, have administered the various territories of the County of Barcelona (Barcelona, Mallorca , Roussillon and Cerdanya ) in the periods between the meetings of the Corts ( general estates ) should guarantee. The historical Generalitat of the former Kingdom of Valencia existed between 1418 and 1707.

In 1982 the Autonomous Community ( Comunidad Autónoma Valenciana ) was formed, the government of which is the Generalitat Valenciana. It has had its own police force since 1992, the Policía de la Generalitat . Since the constitutional reform in 2006, the name was officially shortened to Generalitat .

Institutions

The three main institutions of the Generalitat are:

  • the Corts Valencianes , the autonomous parliament with the legislative functions
  • Consell de la Generalitat Valenciana , the government with the executive functions
  • President de la Generalitat Valenciana , the Prime Minister

Current presidency

Ximo Puig (PSPV-PSOE) has been President of the Generalitat since June 25, 2015 . He succeeded Alberto Fabra ( PP ) in the office that he has held since 2011.
