The Tower of Forbidden Love is a German-French-Italian historical drama directed by Franz Antel .

action

While King Louis X of France is on a campaign, Queen Marguerite reigns in Paris . During this time, the residents of the city are troubled by mysterious murders near a tower. Three men - Philippe, Buridan and a stranger - are invited to a tavern for a party with young women. When they meet the three masked beauties, Philippe and the stranger are killed. Buridan can escape.

At a reception from the queen, Buridan recognizes one of the masked women: it is the queen! He tried to take advantage of this knowledge and asked his Majesty to assume the position of Chancellor that the Duke of St. Lorrain currently holds. Buridan receives this post, but is then asked to rendezvous at the tower. Instead, he sends a friend, Gauthier, to the strange rendezvous in order to visit an old friend himself in the meantime.

To his horror, Buridan learns shortly afterwards that Philippe and Gauthier are or were his sons, long believed lost - born of Marguerite when she was not yet queen, but his mistress! In order to wipe out any trace of her precarious past, Marguerite had tried to kill her own offspring - initially without success. Buridan runs to the tower, but Gauthier has also been murdered in the meantime. Now exposed, there is no more escape for the queen. Burning, Marguerite throws herself into the Seine .

Production notes

The film was based on the novella La Tour de Nesle by Alexandre Dumas , the elder. An earlier version of the film was made in 1954.

As a director was Fritz Umgelter provided, but shortly after the start of filming in Hungary, he suffered a heart attack. So Franz Antel stepped in for him, who tried to continue Umgelter's concept. Since the film was also made in collaboration with a French production company and was released in France, this time Antel called himself François Legrand. His colleague Fritz Umgelter stood by his side, unnamed.

During the shooting in Budapest, the Münchner Abendzeitung in its April 24, 1968 issue sensationally announced:

  • The tower of forbidden love comes in three versions: - the completely free one, which is guaranteed to be forbidden everywhere; - the more moderate one that comes into theaters; - the Vatican version, which is intended for Spain etc.

The German premiere took place on September 2, 1968.

Peter Rothe designed the extensive historical film structures, Charlotte Flemming the costumes. Eberhard Schroeder was Antel's assistant director. For the 84-year-old Rudolf Forster , this was the last completed film role.

The titles in the production partner countries are La Tour de Nesle (France) and Le dolcezze del peccato (Italy).

criticism

The lexicon of international films described the horror story in an original way as a "frivolous comedy."

The evangelical film observer does not have a good opinion about the film : “As was the case with one of the earlier screen adaptations of the same novel by Alexandre Dumas […], this new color film also points to the voluptuous and perverse Queen Marguerite from France and its end to an abundance of rough sex and brutality - today's sex wave with its taste derailments has now also reached the good coat and epee film!
