Fritz Schulz (actor)

Fritz Schulz (born April 25, 1896 in Karlsbad , Austria-Hungary , † May 9, 1972 in Zurich ) was a German film and stage actor , director and singer .

Life

Schulz learned to play the violin as a child and gave his first public concert in Berlin at the age of seven. After completing a middle-class education, he began his film career in the 1910s (probably around 1914) and worked parallel to this as a stage actor. In the silent film era he was mainly a supporting actor. One of his notable roles here was that of the young violin student Kurt Sievers in Richard Oswald's "socially hygienic film" Unlike the Others from 1919, in which he played alongside Conrad Veidt .

It was only with the sound film that he was able to fully develop his funny / musical talent. From 1930 to 1933 he was one of the busiest German film actors and made recordings for eight records ( shellac records ) in Berlin . In 1931 alone he was seen in 14 productions, exclusively in leading roles. While he still had a wide range of roles in the silent film era and was cast as a comedian as well as a character actor, in the early sound film era he only took part in comedies, which mostly showed him as a charming, not always loyal bon vivant. He played lawyers ("The floating virgin", "The rejuvenated Adolar"), librettists ("Nur Du"), business people ("Sehnsucht 202"), soldiers ("Service is service", "Three days of central arrest", "Yes, true is the soldier's love ") and even a marriage swindler (" Das Lied einer Nacht "). His sound film hits appeared on Deutsche Grammophon records. Schulz was married to the actress Countess Agnes Esterhazy until 1936 . In 1933 he worked in two English films. After his return to Germany he was expelled from the Reichsfilmkammer because he was of Jewish descent.

He went to Vienna , where he co-founded the first independent film company. He continued to make films, worked in the theater, and re-recorded three records in 1937. He was surprised by the Anschluss of Austria and was imprisoned with other Jewish artists from his time in Berlin, such as Paul Morgan . The magazine Das Schwarze Korps reported on the arrest of Schulz and Paul Morgan in its May 12, 1938 issue in the article "Old Friends". Both actors were shown in this article with a photo from prison, unshaven, without a tie, with their collars unbuttoned. Then Schulz and Morgan were probably sent to Buchenwald concentration camp . Thanks to the efforts of his now former wife, Schulz was released and fled to Switzerland , where he was only able to continue his career with great difficulty. Morgan, on the other hand, died of prison conditions that same year.

In Switzerland, Fritz Schulz was seen again in a film in 1940: "Dilemma", alongside Leopold Biberti, the brother of the comedian harmonists co-founder Robert Biberti. In Zurich he belonged to the ensemble of the city theater (now the opera house).

After the war, Schulz was back in front of the camera from 1953. Visibly aged, he was initially cast for cheerful roles. As a character actor he was only seen again in his last movie "An Heiligen Wassern" in the role of the village pastor. Overall, Fritz Schulz made comparatively few films after the war, but took part in plays as a writer. After 1960 he was only seen in television productions. He came to theater and film engagements in Germany and Austria, his permanent residence was Porto Ronco ( Ronco sopra Ascona ). In total, Fritz Schulz must have acted in over 150 films, most of which, however, are considered lost . He died in Zurich in 1972 at the age of 76 .
