Proudly waves the flag of black, white and red is a German silent film drama with kriegspropagandistischen undertones from the year 1916. Directed by Siegfried Dessauer played Fritz Schulz a starring role.

action

Several young people are at the center of the plot. There is, for example, Hans, who once rescued the neighboring child Lotte from the water. Since then, the two have been inseparable. Georg, the son of the rich merchant Martens, loves Inge, Hans' sister. However, the father does not agree with this connection at all. One day the war breaks out and Hans decides to go to sea to do his patriotic duty in the fight against the enemy. Everyone else wants to serve the fatherland too. Hans becomes a sailor on a cruiser, Georg becomes an officer, and Inge serves as a nurse. When Georg is wounded, Inge nurses him back to health. Hans and Georg receive the Iron Cross for their bravery . Finally, Hans and Lotte and Georg become engaged to Inge.

The dramaturgical and visual highlight of the film is a mighty sea battle in the fourth act, in which Hans can prove his skills as a seaman and his courage and bravery. Countless (presumably documentary) battle shots of huge warships round off the event optically. As expected, in this German production the German fleet emerges victorious from the naval battle shown.

Production notes

The black-white-red flag is a typical example of the German national and patriotic film that tried to celebrate the supposedly heroic service of the German navy officer on the high seas during World War I. This five-act film was censored in August 1916 and premiered on August 23, 1916 in Berlin's Mozart Hall. In Vienna the film was shown in November of the same year in the Tuchlauben cinema. For the 20-year-old Fritz Schulz this was one of his first film roles.

A part of the total income was transferred to the German fleet association. A greeting given by Grand Admiral von Koester was: “May the film achieve the common goal of caring for our navy.”

The film title refers to one of the most famous German soldier songs from the time of Wilhelminism , the first stanza of which is:

The black-white-red flag
waving proudly from our ships' masts
Death to the enemy who threatens them
Who hates these colors
It flutters
back and forth on the home beach in the wind
and far from the German fatherland
on stormy seas

criticism

“The film shows the fleet as it lives and breathes. All means and means of the folk piece were used to let the fate of simple people read the love of a whole people for the sea and their will to sail. "

- German newspaper of August 24, 1916

“You lead the seaman's career of the seaman's son Hans Peters ... from the first shipboy's beginnings to - now let's say the sea battle on the Skagerrak . Joke and seriousness alternate, two love stories, which of course lead to a happy ending, play in and, in addition to the naval battlefield, you can also take a look at the field. The game management and the excellent recordings deserve a lot of praise. "

- Daily review of August 24, 1916

"If there were any special propaganda to promote the love and confidence for our fleet and our brave blue boys, the film Pride Waving the Flag in Black-White-Red would be one of the most suitable means. ... the author has succeeded in moving and uplifting as well as laughing and strengthening the belief in the ultimate victory. (...) The author has cleverly combined the purely instructive with a very exciting and intensified love story that honestly moves the viewer. (...) The performance is excellent and the game director, Mr. Siegfried Dessauer, did his job very well. "

- Berliner Börsen-Courier dated August 24, 1916

“Among the numerous patriotic war films, this image must be given top priority. (...) A song of praise by the German heroic spirit. And so this film gives the viewer the feeling of having been a witness to tremendous events. Here, however, with the support of the relevant naval authorities, a work has come about that rises far above the significance of normal war dramas and forms an interesting document depicting German heroism. "

- Cinematographic review of November 12, 1916. p. 58

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Material is very good. Photos, game and the sea battle scenes were excellent. "
