The Bull of Olivera is a German silent film historical drama from 1921 with Emil Jannings in the leading role.

action

The story takes place in Olivera on the border of the Spanish provinces of Old Castile and Álava , during the Spanish-French War in the winter of 1808/09. French soldiers have established themselves in the north of the country, and the Marqués de Barrios, lord of the castle of Olivera, grudgingly has to tolerate the French occupiers on his property. However, the nobleman is not ready to accept this without resistance and plans to kill the invaders. At his side is Don Perez, who is engaged to Juana, the daughter of the Marquis. When the French make the big mistake of killing the bull intended for the corrida, the time seems to have come for a rebellion, for the uprising longed for by the people. But the French occupiers have long realized that a revolt against their foreign rule is being planned.

Thereupon Emperor Napoleon sends his General Guillaume, a brutal, savage ruffian, who is supposed to break the resistance of the Spaniards with all his might. As soon as he arrives, Guillaume has the Marques de Barrios arrested. Guillaume orders the lord of the castle to be shot as the head of the resistance and the planned rebellion. Juana asks the general for mercy for her father and brother Manuel, who is also threatened with execution. Guillaume is willing to show mercy, but only if Juana agrees to become his wife. With a heavy heart she agrees to this dirty pact. At the altar, however, she swears revenge and from now on begins to constantly horn the ugly French general, who has fallen passionately in love with Juana and wants to own her completely. Her love really belongs to the nobleman Don Perez, her former fiancé, whom she had to give up to protect her family. Even after they got married, Juana and Perez continued to keep in touch by letter.

One day, a letter from Juana to her loved one is intercepted by Guillaume. Now he knows how his wife really feels about him. Things increase in drama when Napoleon Guillaume withdraws from the Spanish province. After the French emperor learned of his marriage to a Spanish woman, he thought his general was an insecure cantonist. To see Juana again, Guillaume leaves his post without permission and returns to his wife in Spain. There it comes to an ugly, noisy argument in which Juana tries to stab her forced husband. But he snatches the knife from her and stabs her instead. Because of his unauthorized removal from the troops, Napoleon now wants to bring General Guillaume to justice. But the Spanish freedom fighters are already approaching and threatening the life of the emperor. Guillaume leaves his coach to his supreme general so that he can escape unscathed. He himself is ambushed by the rebels while driving in the emperor's carriage and is killed by a Spanish bullet.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: "Material and photos very good, game and scenery excellent."

“Heinrich Lilienfein's play“ The Bull of Olivera ”, whose well-known setting by d'Albert once sparked a violent dispute of opinions, was also forced into a costume film (1921). The biggest event in this film: Emil Jannings. The beast embodied in man, this General Guilleaume, a one-eyed, brutal creature that is terrifying due to its ugliness. "
