Magnus Stifter (born January 23, 1878 in Vienna ; † September 8, 1943 there ) was an Austrian actor and film director .

Life

Magnus Stifter attended the commercial academy and received his training as an actor with Otto. In 1899 he made his debut in Innsbruck, in 1901 he played in Salzburg, 1903 in Linz and from 1905 to 1908 in Berlin. In the 1908/09 season he worked at the Deutsches Theater in New York.

In 1909 he received an engagement at the Dresden theater and at the same time the title of "court actor". His repertoire here included Egmont , Mercutio and Fiesco .

At the beginning of the First World War, Stifter was a lieutenant in the artillery, but around this time his career as a sought-after silent film actor began. In 1916 he also directed two films with Asta Nielsen .

After initially being given leading roles, his film duties diminished in the 1920s, and Stifter turned back to the theater. From 1929 he worked at the Youth Theater and from 1934 at the People's Theater . At the stage arbitration tribunal and labor court , he acted as chairman, secretary and assessor. His son Magnus Stifter (1906–1940) also became an actor.
