The team was founded in 1936 by the Shin Aichi Shimbun , one of the two forerunners of the Chūnichi Shimbun , as the Nagoya Gun ( 名古屋 軍 ) and competed in the newly established Japanese baseball league with the Giants from Tōkyō and the local rival Nagoya-Kinko-Gun ( 名古屋 金 鯱 軍 ). The team's foreign star at this time was "Bucky" Harris McGalliard. They achieved their best placement in 1943 when they finished second behind the Giants.

After several renaming (1944: Sangyō-gun ; 1946: Chūbu-Nippon-gun ; 1947: Chūbu Nippon Dragons ) the team was called Chūnichi Dragons from 1947 to 1950 and since 1955. From 1951 to 1953 she played as Nagoya Dragons and in 1954 as Chūnichi Diamonds .

Since the establishment of today's league structure in 1949, the Dragons have been able to finish a total of eight seasons as first in the Central League (1954, 1974, 1982, 1988, 1999, 2004, 2006 and 2010). But only twice they managed the championship title with the victory of the Nihon Series : 1954 they beat the Nishitetsu Lions , the season best of the Pacific League; and in 2007, when they reached the finals via the playoffs, the newly created Climax Series , they won 4-1 against the Hokkaidō Nippon Ham Fighters . In the decisive fifth game against the Persian-Japanese star pitcher Yū Darvish , the Dragons decided the championship with a perfect game (final score: 1-0).

In 2007 the Dragons also won the Konami Cup between the champions from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan .

Since its founding in 1936, the Dragons achieved a win rate of .519 up to and including 2010 (with 4691 wins and 4344 losses with 301 draws).
