Yū Darvish ( Japanese ダ ル ビ ッ シ ュ 有 , Darubisshu Yū , Persian یو درویش Yū Darwish ; Born August 16, 1986 in Habikino , Osaka Prefecture , Japan ) is an Iranian - Japanese pitcher of the Chicago Cubs . Having already achieved national fame in his high school career, he is considered one of the most talented players in Japan and was awarded the Sawamura Award for the best pitcher in the leaguein his third season as a professional in 2007.

He played for the Japanese national team for the first time in the 2007 Asian Cup, which was also a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Summer Olympics .

Life

Darvish was born the eldest son of Farsad Darwish, an Iranian businessman, and his Japanese mother Ikuko. The two had met at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg , Florida , where his father had also been active for the Florida State soccer team.

High school career

Darvish had his first national appearances during his high school days in four Kōshien participations for the Tōhoku high school, in each case in the spring and summer tournaments of his second and third school year. He became famous when he last participated in the summer of 2004 when he scored the twelfth no-hitter in tournament history against the "Kumamoto Prefecture Technical School" (Kumamoto-kenritsu Kumamoto kōgyō kōtō gakkō) - the first at Kōshien for ten years. In total, he was credited with 7 wins and 3 losses in 12 tournament appearances and an ERA of 1.47.

Scouts of major professional teams had already noticed him internationally: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Atlanta Braves from the North American Major League Baseball (MLB) had allowed him to be observed intensively since high school. The Japanese professional teams Nippon Ham, Hiroshima , Chūnichi , Daiei and Orix tried to get him. At the draft in the fall of 2004 Darvish was drafted in the first round by the Hokkaidō Nippon Ham Fighters.

During his first spring training in 2005 - in the senior year of high school still a minor (in Japan: under 20 years of age) - he was suspended from the fighters and his school and had to do social service after smoking a cigarette in a pachinko hall on a day off had been caught.

Professional career

Because of his suspension Darvish had his first use as a professional only during the Interleague Series (kōryū-sen) in a game against Hiroshima , in which he recorded his first professional victory in eight thrown innings.

In his second season in 2006 he managed to throw his team to victory in ten consecutive appearances; Overall, he recorded 12 wins and 5 losses in 25 inserts and helped his team to achieve first place in the Pacific League and participation in the Nippon Series against the Chūnichi Dragons . There he lost the first game of the series, but brought the Fighters to a 4-1 victory in his second use in the decisive fifth game and thus to the second championship title after 1961. In the following, also victorious Konami Cup Asia Series 2006 against the best teams of the Republic of Korea, the People's Republic and the Republic of China, he was named MVP and was also internationally considered the greatest pitching talent in Japan.

Since the former star pitcher of the Lions , Daisuke Matsuzaka , moved to the Major League for the Boston Red Sox , Darvish has been in the focus of the Japanese public and is intended to make up for Matsuzaka's departure as a crowd puller. Former Fighters manager Trey Hillman said Darvish has the potential to outperform Matsuzaka and become the best pitcher in the world. Unlike Matsuzaka, Darvish has announced to the Japanese press that he has no intention of bothering to move to North America.

Since under Japanese law dual citizenship is only permitted up to the age of 22, Darvish had to choose between Iranian and Japanese nationality. In order to be able to participate in the 2008 Summer Olympics with the Japanese national team, he opted for Japanese citizenship. He made his debut in the national jersey during a game of the 2007 Asian Baseball Championship against the team from Chinese Taipei ( Republic of China ). Japan won the tournament and thus also secured participation in the Olympics.

On October 29, 2007 Darvish was awarded the Sawamura-Eiji-shō for the best pitcher for his season performance. He was the first winner since Shinji Imanaka in 1993 to meet all seven nomination criteria: 25 starts, 15 wins, 10 complete games, a win rate of .600, 200 innings thrown, 150 strikeouts and an ERA below 2.50.

family

In August 2007, Darvish announced his wedding to actress Saeko in a stadium interview . The two married that same year and have a son.

Charity

In March 2007, he announced the establishment of a Yū Darvish Water Fund to finance the construction and maintenance of drinking water supply systems in developing countries; the funds are to be administered by the Japan Water Forum ( 日本 水 フ ォ ー ラ ム , Nihon Mizu Fōramu). Darvish himself wants to pay 100,000 yen (around 600 euros) into the fund for every win in the regular season.
