The love of van Royk is a German silent film from 1918 by Lupu Pick with Bernd Aldor in the title role.

action

The dramatic love story takes place in diplomatic circles in the Middle East. The Dutchman Artur van Royk looks back on a memorable event that happened four years ago. He was celebrating the Dutch Queen's birthday on his yacht when it was reported that an uninvited guest had climbed onto his sailing boat. This man asked for protection because he claimed he was being persecuted. Van Royk granted the protection, and today he meets this man again.

The persecuted man of yore is called Mehmed Pascha and is now the police chief of Turkestan, where van Royk is now serving as the Dutch envoy. Through Mehmed Pascha, van Royk met the wife of his English colleague Romney, Lady Mary Romney. She is a quiet creature who is joked by her characterless husband. He wants to divorce her because Romney intends to marry his cousin Ruth. Romney also wants custody of his and Mary's child and requires his wife to sign a waiver in the event of a divorce. But as a loving mother she defends herself with hands and feet against this immoral request.

Van Royk falls in love with the benevolent British lady and promises to help Mary when Romney gets the signature with the help of a nasty trick that his secretary has hatched. For Mary's sake Van Royk wants to get back the document with the forced signature and disguises herself as a harem lady in order to get into the vicinity of Romney undetected. But the British envoy recognized his Dutch colleague. When he draws a dagger, there is a scuffle in which Romney dies. In his distress van Royk tells Mehmed about the bloody act. Since he still owes his savior a favor, Mehmed Pasha blames a man who is already in prison for five murders. Through his act of rescue, van Royk hopes to win the love of the now widowed Mary. On the way back from Romney's house, van Royk suddenly sees the figure of the dead Romney sitting opposite in the boat. Van Royk realizes that as long as he was with Mary, the dead man's widow, Romney's shadow would always stand between them. So he voluntarily renounces his happiness and leaves the country without his great love.

In 1931 Kurt Bernhardt filmed the material under the title The Man Who Committed the Murder with Conrad Veidt and Heinrich George in the leading roles.

criticism

“Bernd Aldor… definitely has something striking. He masters himself and his roles, which he gives strong emotional expression. The subject matter revolves around the new-old story of love ... The oriental touch, which the director also used in an exemplary manner, is interesting. [...] The ensemble is also well chosen, as the whole gives the impression of careful selection. The development of the plot has been carefully extracted from the structure and shaped into a beautiful work of art. "
