Willibald Gaebel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willibald Gaebel , also called Willy Gaebel (born February 8, 1879 in Graudenz , West Prussia , † after May 1943 in Germany ) was a German cameraman .

Life

Shortly before the turn of the century, Gaebel began working as a photographer. In 1908 he joined the film industry and initially worked for the production company Oskar Messters . His early work before World War I included several films with Henny Porten . In 1915 Gaebel was called up for military service. Until shortly before the end of the war in 1918 he served as a photographer for the German Air Force. Immediately thereafter, he returned to the cinema and worked again with Henny Porten. Willibald 'Willy' Gaebel later photographed productions by Lupu Pick , Felix Basch , Paul Ludwig Stein , Carl Froelich , Fritz Wendhausen , Erich Schönfelder and Robert Wiene .

Gaebel did not make the transition to sound film; from 1932 to 1938 the former cameraman remained largely without merit , as can be read in Kay Weniger's Das Großes Personenlexikon des Films . In the Third Reich Gaebel belonged to the SA ; this secured him the post of block attendant . In 1937 Gaebel suffered a stroke , but was then able to earn a small living as a still photographer . His last confirmed sign of life dates back to May 1943. Gaebel presumably died within the following two years, there is no evidence of him after the end of the war in 1945.
