The Guilt is a German silent film melodrama from 1919 with Henny Porten in the lead role.
action
The art student Maria Helga Nansen fell in love with her teacher and sculptor Eugen Gedon. He asks her to model a statue that is supposed to symbolize “guilt”. But when she finds out that Gedon is married, she leaves him and breaks off her studies. Instead, she becomes little Inge's tutor for the old Countess Halström. Years later she married their son Jürgen.
In the meantime Gedon has finished and exhibited his sculpture. Jürgen immediately realizes that his wife must have posed for the sculptor and is shocked. He angrily confronts his wife. Believing that the statue not only symbolizes guilt in general, but also her very own, personal one, the young woman commits suicide.
