Acne Studios AB is a Swedish fashion company .

Founded in 1996 by the Swedish entrepreneur Jonny Johansson with partners as part of their ACNE project in Stockholm , the company has grown from its original focus on denim and jeans to an internationally known fashion brand for contemporary women's and men's clothing, shoes and accessories in the early 2000s Developed in the upper mid-price segment. However, Acne Studios still shows its passion for jeans through the garments in the collection, which are made exclusively from denim: "Blå konst". In 1996, Jonny Johannson (* 1969) and Tomas Skoging founded the ACNE project with friends, one in the individual projects Acne Advertising ( advertising agency ), Acne Art Department ( design studio ), Acne Digital ( web design ), Acne Film ( film production ), Acne Jeans ( Fashion ) and Acne JR (children's toys). The project was inspired by Andy Warhol's Factory . The first orders came from the Swedish fashion companies Whyred and J. Lindeberg . The office was set up on Stockholm's Drottninggatan shopping street .

The name Acne , which actually stands for the skin disease acne in Swedish , is, according to Johannson, an acronym for "Ambition to Create Novel Expressions", albeit the abbreviation for computer affinity the founder originally stood for "Associated Computer Nerd Enterprises" (German about "United Computer Freak Companies").

While most ACNE employees were graphic designers from their early years , Johannson, a trained furniture designer , had previously worked for jeans manufacturer Diesel . In 1997 Johannson had 100 pairs of slim- fitting unisex jeans made in Sweden with red seams produced and distributed them to friends and business partners as a PR campaign for ACNE. A stylist friend of mine showed the jeans in the Swedish Elle magazine , whereupon Swedish retailers ordered the jeans. After a report in the London lifestyle magazine Wallpaper * and an initial order from the luxury department store Fred Segal in Beverly Hills , the international demand for Acne products increased. As a result, Johannson created a complete, progressive fashion collection in 1998 with the help of the Swedish designer Ann-Sofie Back, which was initially marketed under the name Acne Action Jeans and finally as Acne Jeans . To this day, Acne Studios presents fashion collections in the simple Scandinavian design style in mostly monochrome fabrics and modern cuts for a young target group. One of the brand's classics is the ankle-high women's ankle boot Pistol with a wide heel and zip .

In 2003 the first Acne Jeans store opened in Stockholm. Later shops were designed in a minimalist-modern style in collaboration with the Swedish architect Andreas Fornell. The first store outside of Sweden opened in Berlin in 2005 in collaboration with Andreas Murkudis, brother of Kostas Murkudis . In 2006, Acne Jeans was renamed Acne Studios and spun off from the ACNE collective after starting to refer to the individual Acne stores as "Acne Studios ". In the same year, an investor with a 21% stake in the company got on board and Acne started its own online shop . In 2008, the first Acne store in the US opened at 10, Greene Street in SoHo, Manhattan (moved to 33, Greene Street in 2012).

Acne has published the lifestyle magazine Acne Paper twice a year since 2004 . In 2006, Acne entered into a collaboration with Tretorn Sweden on a range of sneakers , followed by a high-priced collaboration with Lanvin over several seasons over a denim-based clothing collection for women and men in the style of the two fashion houses . From 2009, Acne Studios' collections for women and men were presented on the catwalk during London Fashion Week. From 2011 the company was present with the men's collection with a fashion show at the Paris Fashion Week. Since 2013, the women's collection has been presented on the catwalk as part of the Paris Fashion Week and the men's collection has been shown to the press in a presentation. In 2010 Johannson brought out a limited collection of furniture under the Acne Studios brand name .

Acne Studios has been headquartered at Lilla Nygatan 23 in Stockholm since 2008, in the former branch of the credit banks known from the hostage-taking at Norrmalmstorg . Flagship stores are maintained in Stockholm, Paris, London, New York City, Los Angeles and Tokyo. The chief designer is still Jonny Johannson, who heads a team of designers. Mikael Schiller, who was hired as CEO in 2001 , has been Executive Chairman (German: Chairman of the Board of Directors ) of Acne Studios AB since 2011 . Mattias Magnusson has been CEO since 2011, previously assistant to Schiller. In Germany there are shops in Berlin (opened in 2005) and Hamburg (opened in 2007). In 2015 there were around 40 Acne Studios shops worldwide, including several shops-in-shops in larger department stores , such as Galeries Lafayette or Shinsegae . The largest Acne boutique to date was opened at the end of 2013 on 450 m² in the Eastman Columbia Building in downtown Los Angeles . Around 650 retailers worldwide are supplied. Acne's annual sales in 2013 were the equivalent of $ 120 million. In 2005 Acne Jeans had only 20 employees and a turnover of 7 million euros. The company has so far refused an offer to take over a company by Kering .

The former sub- projects Acne Advertising , Acne Art Department , Acne Digital and Acne Film were merged into the marketing and communication agency ACNE, which to this day exists independently of the Acne Studios fashion division and takes on the advertising contracts for the latter. ACNE also owns the toy manufacturer Acne JR . The advertising agency has offices in Stockholm, Los Angeles, Berlin and London with branches in Paris and Amsterdam.
