The term unisex applies to facilities, terms and products that are intended for all genders equally. In relation to institutions, the opposite of “unisex” is the institutionalized gender segregation ; products are referred to as gender design .

Examples

Unisex urinals can be used by women and men alike

There are unisex toilets , unisex insurance tariffs or gender-neutral unisex names. Clothing and accessories that can be worn by all genders are referred to as unisex clothing . Today's examples of this are above all T-shirts , jeans and sneakers , as well as tights , sports underwear and other items of leisure, functional and sportswear as well as certain perfumes, watch models or sunglasses. The assignment of fashion items to the unisex area is subject to cultural and historical conditions and depends on the understanding of roles, taste formation and practical considerations. Garments that were originally gender-specifically assigned can gradually be adopted by other genders, as is the case with jeans.

Word composition

The word “uni” comes from the Latin “unus”, in German “one”, and, like the term uniform, stands for the uniform appearance, in this case related to the natural sexes “ sexus ”.
