Gerhard Schmied

Gerhard Schmied (born May 14, 1940 in Mährisch Rothwasser ) is a German cultural sociologist .

After studying sociology , education , politics and Catholic theology in Heidelberg and Mainz , he worked first at the Pedagogical Institute and then at the Institute for Sociology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 1972 he was Helmut Schoeck in sociology doctorate . He completed his habilitation in Mainz in 1983 with a thesis on the sociology of the time. In 1989 he was appointed adjunct professor. In 2005 he retired.

Awards and memberships

From 1989 to 1997 he was a member of the Council of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion.

working area

At first he mainly published articles on the sociology of education and on sociological theory (especially in relation to Karl Mannheim and Norbert Elias ), then he concentrated increasingly on topics of cultural sociology with special emphasis on the sociology of religion .
