Lola Montez, the King's Dancer (alternative title: The Story of an Adventure ) is a German historical silent film from 1922 by Willi Wolff with his wife Ellen Richter in the title role.

action

With some historically inaccurate embellishments, the plot reproduces the vita of the famous Irish dancer in a pictorial arc and tells of her meteoric rise to her deep fall and end in bitter poverty.

At the beginning of this story, Lola Montez is a young gypsy who was once prophesied by an old gypsy that she would marry a king. In order to achieve her goal, she initially helps a little with an attempted murder with poison on the Spanish pretender to the throne, but the attempt at killing fails. She is arrested and charged with attempted murder. Lola is able to convince the governor of Barcelona of her innocence and is then released again. At his side, which also means protection for her, Lola leaves the country and travels with him to Venice. There the adventurer met a student from Munich, with whom she immediately fell in love. However, the governor orders her to leave him alone and sends her to Paris to train the Irish woman there to be a dancer. Here Lola Montez met Louis Napoleon, the future ruler of France (as Napoleon III). When a liaison becomes known, there is a scandal and Lola flees again.

This time she stranded in Munich in 1846, hoping to meet her student love from Venice again. Instead, she got an engagement at the royal court and national theater and got to know King Ludwig I of Bavaria in this way. The monarch quickly takes a liking to the racy dark-haired woman and offers her to look after her if she becomes his lover. Both live their time together as an intoxicating affair. But one day the people revolt against their king, who throws the money out of the window for the benefit of the dancing mistress. When a political revolt threatened the country in the spring of 1848, Lola Montez had to move on. Ultimately, her life leads straight downhill, and Lola ends up completely impoverished in New York, where she dies not even 40 years old.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The subject is kept interesting throughout, the direction is quick and without the lengths that are otherwise common in costume films. The presentation is very good, the presentation is not always up to date, on the other hand the exterior shots in Spain and Venice deserve full recognition. The photography is very good. "
