Fritz Beckmann (actor)
Fritz Beckmann (* 1867 ; † April 29, 1933 in Berlin ) was a German theater and film actor as well as a stage director.
Life
Nothing is currently known about Beckmann's place of birth, origin and education. He had played a lot of the theater since the end of the 19th century, especially on Berlin stages. In the last few years before the First World War he was seen a. a. at the Lustspielhaus and at the Folies Caprice. At this time Beckmann had his very first experiences in front of the camera. Nevertheless, the stages of the German capital initially remained his most important places of activity and he belonged to a. the ensembles of the Metropol, Thalia and Residenztheaters.
At the end of the war in 1918, he concentrated intensively on film work and took part in a considerable number of entertainment productions throughout the Weimar Republic (though entirely irrelevant in terms of film history). Beckmann filled the entire range of supporting characters: he was once an impresario (in Brutal ), a moneylender (in The Tragedy of Manja Orsan ) or a carpet dealer (in Indian Nights ), sometimes a bookmaker (in Va banque ), a servant (in Nobody Knows ), a silk merchant (in The Conspiracy at Genoa ) or a train driver (in The Confession of a Fallen ). Beckmann was also repeatedly used as a police officer, close relative or host. In later years Beckmann's film characters became more serious and of higher rank: he was now seen as the captain of a sailing ship, as a minister and again and again as the director of a stage institution: theater ( the walk through hell, I gladly kissed women ), vaudeville ( the dance for love and luck ) and revue (that was in Heidelberg on a blue summer night ).
At the same time, Fritz Beckmann reduced his stage presence, but with the dawn of the sound film era, he increasingly returned to the theater. After his commitment to the Komische Oper (until 1931), to which Martin Zickel , one of his former employers from the imperial era, had brought him, Fritz Beckmann took over the management of the theater in Behrenstrasse for the last two seasons and worked there both as Actor as well as director.
