- April / May: Jules Verne publishes his short story Maître Zacharius ou l'horloger qui avait perdu son âme in two parts . Tradition genevoise ( Master Zacharius ) in the Musée des familles magazine .
- Theodor Fontane publishes his experience report A Summer in London .
- Ludwig Bechstein's historical novel Der Dunkelgraf is published by Meidinger in Frankfurt am Main .
Poetry
- December 3 : Theodor Fontane carries the ballad Archibald Douglas , for which he has taken over the so-called " Chevy Chase verse " of the old Scottish and Old English ballad poets, under the title Der Exile at the foundation festival of the tunnel over the Spree in Arnims Hotel (Unter den Linden 44) in the presence of Theodor Storm for the first time to great cheers.

- The comedy Poverty is Not a Vice ( Бедность не порок ) by Alexander Ostrowski is in print and has its world premiere on January 25th at the Maly Theater in Moscow.

- Theodor Mommsen publishes the first volume of his major work, Roman History .
- Sigismund Wilhelm Koelle wrote the groundbreaking study Polyglotta Africana , in which he compared around 120 African languages .
