Nathaniel Hawthorne publishes the novel The Scarlet Letter .	The novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens published in book form.

• November: After the last monthly sequels with illustrations by Phiz were published, the novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens appears for the first time in book form. Dickens himself later referred to David Copperfield as his favorite story. It is considered to be one of the most important educational novels in English literature.

• Nathaniel Hawthorne publishes the novel The Scarlet Letter , which deals with puritanism from the perspective of romanticism .
• Alexandre Dumas the Elder publishes the novel The Black Tulip .
• Herman Melville publishes the novel White Jacket or The World on a Warship .

drama

• After problems with the theater censorship, the comedy Der Bankrott by Alexander Nikolajewitsch Ostrowski appears one year late in the magazine Moskvitjanin under the name It stays in the family ( Свои люди - сочтёмся ). It was premiered over a decade later.

• March 27 : The weekly Household Words published by Charles Dickens appears for the first time.
• June: * Harper & Brothers release the first edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine in the US . The first edition of 7,500 copies is sold out immediately, and within six months a circulation of 50,000 copies is reached.
