- The adventure novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo ( The Count of Monte Christo ) by Alexandre Dumas , which has been running in sequels since 1844, is continued in the magazine Le Journal des débats .
- October 17th bis 1. December : Charles Dickens wrote his third annual Christmas Carol The Cricket on the Hearth ( The Cricket on herd ), which is then immediately released.
- Fyodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski completes the work on his first novel Poor People .

- The first edition of the humorous, richly illustrated weekly Fliegende Blätter is published in Munich by Verlag Braun & Schneider. It appeared regularly until 1944 and was known for its precise, satirical characterization of the German bourgeoisie.
