- October 19 : In the Paris daily Le Journal des Débats the last episode of the displayed serialized novel Mystères de Paris ( The Mysteries of Paris ), with the French writer Eugène Sue , the genre of the feuilleton novel justified.
- November 11th : Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling is published in Denmark .

- December 19 : The novel A Christmas Carol ( A Christmas Carol ) by Charles Dickens is published. Due to differences with his editor, Dickens publishes the novel, which he wrote between September and December, at his own expense.
- Fanny Lewald publishes the novel Jenny . It is considered to be one of the most important and earliest “ women's novels ” of the 19th century in German. The work, which received very positive reviews, is considered to be just as important for women as for Jewish emancipation .
- The first parts of the serial novel The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit ( Martin Chuzzlewit ) by Charles Dickens is out in print. The novel, which Dickens himself considers to be one of his best works, and which is considered to be his last picaresque novel , is received with moderate enthusiasm by the public. Dickens then changes the plot he planned in the course of the sequels.

- Edgar Allan Poe publishes the ballad The Conqueror Worm in Graham's Magazine .

- The drama Les Burgraves ( The Burgraves ) by Victor Hugo is a complete failure that forever spoils the author's enjoyment of the theater.
Non-fiction
- Tassilo of Heydebrand and Lasa , a member of the Berlin School in chess , which publishes Manual of chess on chess history , chess openings and chess endgames that the 1840 deceased chess player Paul Rudolf von Bilguer has begun. The work, which had five editions by 1874 , contributed significantly to the spread of algebraic notation and introduced the tabular representation of the opening theory. Among other things, the Bird defense of the Spanish game is mentioned for the first time.

- March 4 : The first edition of the illustrated weekly newspaper L'Illustration appears in Paris. It was founded by the journalists Édouard Charton, Jacques-Julien Dubochet , Jean-Baptiste-Alexandre Paulin, the geographer Adolphe Joanne and the publisher Jean-Jacques Dubochet.
- July 1 : In Leipzig, the first edition appearing Illustrirten newspaper as a licensed edition of the 1842 founded in England magazine The Illustrated London News . The publisher and editor is Johann Jacob Weber . Co-founder, technical director and liaison to the woodcut artists in Leipzig and Berlin is the Leipzig bookseller and publisher Carl Berendt Lorck .
- September: The Scot James Wilson founds The Economist magazine in London .
- October 1 : The British weekly News of the World appears for the first time. It is published in London by John Browne Bell. With its low price of three pence, it appeals to a large readership, especially in the working class.
