John Leech (born August 29, 1817 in London , † October 29, 1864 ibid) was a British draftsman and caricaturist .

John Leech first made himself known through book illustrations and worked for the famous English satirical magazine Punch from 1847 .

Without having enjoyed systematic art education, he soon developed into an excellent caricaturist, who liked to depict the London folk life in humorous depictions and castigate the excesses of fashion.

He has also illustrated numerous novels, sports books, and almanacs, and supplied over 50,000 sheets of drawings. His caricatures are devoid of rudeness and imbued with a higher artistic aspiration. A selection of his drawings was published under the title: Pictures of life and character (new edition 1881).
