- February: Typee by Herman Melville appears for the first time under the name Narrative of a Four Months' Residence among the Natives of a Valley of the Marquesas Islands .
- The last parts of the serialized novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo ( The Count of Monte Christo ) by Alexandre Dumas , which has been running since 1844, appear in the journal Le Journal des débats .
- The epistolary novel Poor Folk by Fyodor Dostoevsky is the first time in the almanac Petersburg anthology published and received enthusiastically by critics.
- The Double by Fyodor Dostoevsky appears.
- The third work by Dostoyevsky is the story Mr. Prochartschin .
- Johann Gottfried Herder's Journal of My Journey in 1769 is published for the first time.
