Helen Zimmer (born March 25, 1846 in Hamburg , † January 11, 1934 in Florence ) was an English writer and translator .

Life

Zimmer came to England as a child, worked for the weekly Once a week in 1868 and gave collected narratives under the titles: Stories in precious stones (1873), Told by the ways (1874), Half-hours with French novelists (1881, 2 Bde.) And Stories from foreign novelists (2nd ed. 1885). She has also worked for various prestigious magazines.

More serious works by her are: Schopenhauer , his life and philosophy (1876), the first independent account of the German philosopher in England, and her Lessing biography: GE Lessing, his life and his works (1878; German, Celle 1879), the also found recognition in Germany. She translated Lessing's Hamburg Dramaturgy (1879) and pieces from Firdusi (1883). Friedrich Nietzsche met her several times in his vacation spot Sils-Maria ; as a later translator and commentator on several of his writings, she played a role in the early English -language reception of Nietzsche .
