Manual of the game of chess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The manual of the chess game (colloquially the Bilguer ) is the title of a book first published in 1843 on chess history, chess openings and chess endings.

The concept comes from Paul Rudolf von Bilguer , who began collecting material for the novel book in the 1830s. After Bilguer's early death in 1840, Tassilo von Heydebrand and Lasa Bilguer continued work and published the work in 1843.

The introduction begins with the history of chess . Then follows in the first part in a clear table form a representation of the chess openings according to the state of knowledge of the chess theory at the time, enriched with analyzes of the Berlin chess school and important games on the individual variants. The second part contains a systematic overview of the theory of endgames with detailed analyzes in several chapters .

Under the editorship of von der Lasas, four more editions appeared in 1852, 1858, 1864 and 1874. For the fifth edition von der Lasa had collected 10,000 games that had been published in books and magazines in several languages. Up to the fifth edition, however, von der Lasa only named von Bilguer as the author.

The sixth edition was published in 1880 by Constantin Schwede, the seventh in 1891 by Emil Schallopp and the eighth edition in 1916 by Carl Schlechter . The eighth edition was more than 1000 pages long and contained original analyzes of some of the leading contemporary chess masters, such as: B. Rudolf Spielmann , Siegbert Tarrasch and Richard Teichmann . After the eighth edition, supplements appeared for which Jacques Mieses (1921) and Hans Kmoch (1930) were responsible.

The manual of the game of chess was widely available and numerous chess players have learned from it. It contributed significantly to the spread of algebraic notation and introduced the tabular representation of opening theory, which was later adopted by many authors. The manual of the game of chess is still considered a classic in chess literature today .
