history

Saulheim was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 7th century as Sowelenheim . The Franconian caretaker Pippin the Middle († December 16, 714) gave goods in the three places Wörrstadt, Armsheim and Saulheim to the St. Nicomedes Church in Mainz. At the end of the 10th century, parts of northern Rheinhessen, including Nieder- and Ober-Saulheim, came into the possession of the Archbishop of Mainz. While Ober-Saulheim was subordinate to the Wild and Rhine Counts in the following centuries, the local knightly families in Nieder-Saulheim preserved their independence from the Count Palatine and the Archbishop of Mainz.

During the French Revolution , the aristocratic families in today's Saulheim were also disempowered. After the Congress of Vienna Nieder- and Ober-Saulheim were assigned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse . The communities belonged to the districts of Alzey and Oppenheim (1852–1937); the latter was dissolved in 1937.

The community of Saulheim was newly formed on June 7, 1969 from the previously independent communities of Nieder-Saulheim and Ober-Saulheim and incorporated into the district of Alzey-Worms, which was established on the same date.

religion

About two thirds of the population are of Protestant faith, the remaining third - apart from a few non-denominational people - Catholic . There are three church buildings in the village, two Protestant and one Catholic.

coat of arms

Saulheim coat of arms
Blazon : "Three (2: 1) increasing silver moons set in red."
Justification for the coat of arms: This coat of arms appears in the same way in court seals from 1570 and 1620, in reverse color sequence on a stone with the year 1571, which comes from the no longer standing tower of the Church of St. Bartholomew and was attached to the town hall in 1855. The three crescent moons formed the coat of arms of the Rhenish knight family of dogs , which died out in the 18th century , and whose numerous tribes named themselves after the Saulheim seat. It has been handed down in the most varied of variants and tingings. In order to distinguish the municipal and aristocratic coats of arms from one another, the colors have been determined in the manner described above. Until the end of the 18th century the place was owned by a Ganerbenschaft under the electoral Palatinate sovereignty.
