geography

The community in the middle of Rheinhessen Switzerland has 842 hectares of forest area, the largest and almost only forest area in Rheinhessen . In the Vorholzwald there is also the highest elevation in Rheinhessen, the Kappelberg, at 358 meters .

history

Offenheim was first mentioned in a document in 768, when Accuratus and Unsula donated their property in the Offenheim district to the Lorsch monastery . On March 26th, 771 the place is abbreviated Offenh. mentioned again when a man named Glimmund donated a vineyard to this monastery. The document mentions the Maronoberge location , it is one of the first mentions of a wine location in Germany. Another document dated March 5, 775 mentions Offenheim without an abbreviation and also in today's writing. Later the place was also written Uffinheim (1295) and Offinheim (1357).
