The Kappelberg is 358  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in Rheinhessen . It is located in the Saar-Nahe mountainous region between Offenheim and Oberwiesen in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Alzey-Worms in the vicinity of the Donnersbergkreis .

In old sketches the mountain is referred to as the Cappelberg , which probably indicates a former chapel at this point.

The Kappelberg rises within the North Palatinate Mountains - near the border with the Palatinate  - in the municipality of Offenheim. The summit of the mountain in the Vorholzwald is 4 km southwest of Offenheim, 3.2 km northwest of Morschheim , 1.8 km north-northwest of Orbis , 1.9 km northeast of Oberwiesen , 2.3 km south of Nieder-Wiesen and 2, 6 km southwest of Bechenheim .

Past the Kappelberg to the west, the Wiesbach flows through Oberwiesen and further north-northeast through Nieder-Wiesen . The Selz rises a little south-southeast of the mountain near Orbis .

The Kappelberg is located on the edge of the landscape protection area Rheinhessische Schweiz , but is not generally counted as part of the eponymous landscape.

The state road  406 runs south past the Kappelberg between Offenheim and Oberwiesen , from which the L 407 branches off east of the mountain, leading north to Bechenheim.

Natural allocation

The Kappelberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Saar-Nahe-Bergland (No. 19), in the main unit North Palatinate Bergland (193) and in the subunit Donnersberg massive (193.4) ​​to the natural area Bürgerwald (193.42). The landscape drops to the north in the natural area of Wiesener Randhöhen (193.15), which forms the main part of Rheinhessische Schweiz. To the east it leads into the natural area Bolander Randhöhen (227.41), which belongs to the sub-unit Alzeyer Hügelland (227.4) in the main unit group Northern Upper Rhine Lowland (22) and in the main unit Rheinhessisches Tafel- und Hügelland (227) .

Others

About 10 m away from the summit there is a larger rock pile made of basalt stones. A community of interests from the local communities involved was founded in May 2008 and made the highest point in Rheinhessen, which was hidden under thick undergrowth, accessible and signposted. A summit cross was erected in March 2009 .
