Church and fire station

Kettenheim is located south of the city of Alzey in the Alzeyer hill country . The community also includes the Bahnsiedlung, Hessensteigermühle, Wiesenmühle and Wormser Strasse residential areas .

history

Formerly called Kiedenheim (first mentioned in 1171) or Kittenheim (1194), the place was in the lower Nahegau , whose inhabitants were from time immemorial obliged to serve the lords of the castle in Alzey . The family of Dieter von Kiedenheim had great estates from Ruprecht III. to hereditary. The village of Egersheim or Ergisheim , which probably perished shortly after the Thirty Years' War, was located northeast of Kettenheim .

Until the end of the 18th century, Kettenheim belonged to the Palatinate Oberamt Alzey . After the seizure of the left bank of the Rhine by French troops revolution (1794) Kettenheim was 1798-1814 the Canton Alzey in department Donnerberg assigned. After the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region became part of the province of Rheinhessen in the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1816 .

coat of arms

Kettenheim coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver, a blue bar covered with a black chain."
Justification of the coat of arms: This coat of arms of the family von Kettenheim, which was officially granted to the town after the Rhineland was liberated in 1931, confuses the colors (probably accidentally, but not unjustified) because the Kettenheim stake was not blue, but rather black according to the Helwich family . Brilmayer brings the blue stake in silver , whose model is likely to have been authoritative for today's local coat of arms. In contrast, the KETTENHEIMER COURT SIEGEL ANNO 1717 shows a lion walking to the left swinging a broken chain over it - a particularly expressive image that by far surpasses the coat of arms of the nobility chosen as the local coat of arms in heraldic and artistic terms.

Buildings

  • Town hall from 1686 with richly carved half-timbering and a bay window on a hall.
  • Hessensteiger Mühle consisting of two properties (both former watermills)
    • Hessensteiger Mühle I: Evidence of the existence through entries of baptisms, births ... in church records since at least 1570, before that the mill probably belonged to the Weidas monastery in Dautenheim, therefore a much earlier existence is possible.
    • Hessensteiger Mühle II: Evidence of existence since 1840 by fire register in the archive of the city of Alzey. Location: on the border with Alzey and Dautenheim below the Dautenheim motorway bridge.
