history
Traces of Neolithic (spiral ceramics) and Iron Age settlement (probably by the Celts ) have been found in Albig. Some finds, including the fibula , ring and vessels from a late La Tène grave are exhibited in the Mainz State Museum. The foundations of a Roman villa rustica were discovered on a hill near Albig and, under the mistaken assumption that it was a medieval castle ruin, called " Schloss Hammerstein ".
Albig is mentioned for the first time in 767 in a vineyard deed of donation for the Lorsch monastery as Albucha in Wormsgau . A document from 1135 names the place Albecho , it now belonged to the Nahegau . The Albiger Liebfrauenkirche was first mentioned in a document in 962. The right of patronage belonged to the imperial abbey of St. Maximin in Trier.
From the 14th to the end of the 18th century, the place belonged to the Electoral Palatinate and was under the administration and jurisdiction of the Alzey District Office . In 1766 a chapel was set up on the ground floor of the town hall for the Catholic Christians. This combination of town hall and church is a specialty in the area.
After taking the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops , the region in 1797 was supported by France annexed . From 1798 to 1814 Albig belonged to the canton of Alzey in the Donnersberg department . Albig became the capital of a Mairie , which Bermersheim also belonged to.
Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and a state treaty concluded in 1816 between Hessen-Darmstadt , Austria and Prussia , the region, including the municipality of Albig, became part of the Grand Duchy of Hessen (Hessen-Darmstadt) and was assigned to the province of Rheinhessen . After the dissolution of the Rhine-Hessian cantons, the place came in 1835 to the newly established Alzey district , to which it belonged until 1969.
