history

In the copy book of the Lorsch Codex , Gabsheim is mentioned with ten documents (No. 1309, 1439–47). The first written mention is from May 5th, 767 with the founder Giselbert (one is not sure about the year, maybe 757).

Gabsheim was called Geispisheim (Geispitzheim) in the Middle Ages ; In addition to many other spellings, Geisbodesheim (767), Gessbosheim (1184), Gespisheim (1211), Geispotsheim (1266), Geispesheim (1325) Gaubsheim (1588) are documented. In the regional dialect, the place name evolved into Gabsheim over time . Since the place is predominantly Catholic , it is also called in dialect as God's Gabsem .

The "fortified place in Geisbodesheim near the church" mentioned in 1250 allows conclusions to be drawn about a permanent place of residence or a small castle that was the ancestral seat of the noble family von Geispitzheim. One of the offspring of the family is Eberhard Vetzer von Geispitzheim († 1520), with a magnificent tomb in the Gau-Odernheim simultaneous church . As vassals of the feudal lords of Bolanden and increasingly from the 14th century as feudal men of the Counts of Veldenz , the Knights of Geispitzheim (also known as the Knights of Geisbodesheim) are mentioned as Burgmannen zu Odernheim am Glan (1190), on the Moschellandsburg near Obermoschel (1377, 1421, 1431), at Treuenfels Castle near Altenbamberg (1392), at Armsheim (14th century) and in neighboring Bechtolsheim (until the beginning of the 16th century). The name inscriptions on nine surviving tombstones from the 14th and 15th centuries clearly document that the Knights of Geispolzheim had their family burial place at the St. Alban Church not far from their Gabsheim headquarters at that time.

In addition to the evidence from the Gothic era, the statue of St. John Nepomuk and the statue of the Good Shepherd from the workshop of the Mainz Baroque sculptor Martin Biterich are noteworthy from the Baroque period .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Gabsheim
Blazon : "Divided by silver and red, above three blue lilies next to each other, below a lying silver spade leaf."
Justification of the coat of arms: The illustrated and described coat of arms of Gabsheim goes back to a court seal that was handed down in 1507 . While the spade probably represents a place symbol, the lilies point to the treasurers of Dalberg , the local lords until the end of the 18th century. Finally, the field colors silver and red create a reference to the former Archdiocese of Mainz .
