Church in Gabsheim

St. Alban is a Catholic parish church in Gabsheim . The church named after Alban von Mainz is included in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , see also: List of cultural monuments in Gabsheim .

Building

The late Gothic hall church stands on a formerly fortified cemetery . The choir with a five-eighth closing probably dates back to the 14th century (compare in the neighboring village: St. Wigbert (Schornsheim) ). The nave around 1490, originally with a single nave, was not expanded until around 1518, probably by stonemasons from Meisenheimer Hütte ( Philipp von Gmünd ), to form a hall church in the division 3 by 3 and vaulted with a continuous rib network over octagonal pillars. West tower around 1500, with a vaulted ground floor.

history

The Catholic parish church in Gabsheim is one of the oldest and largest churches in Rheinhessen and is a prominent point for the entire area due to its dominant position over the town. The early medieval church was founded in 1164 by Pope Lucius III. confirmed as property of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Alban near Mainz . It has been consecrated to St. Alban to this day.

Mainz Cathedral Vicar Georg Helwich wrote a first description of the Gabsheim church when he was in Gabsheim for the grape harvest in 1612. This description appeared in his handwritten collection "Syntagma monumentorum et epitaphiorum"

The previous building mentioned in 1164 gave way to a large new building in the Gothic style towards the end of the 15th century. Historically as well as stylistically, a member of the “Meisenheim School” could be considered as a master builder. Whether the draft can be attributed to Philipp von Gmünd himself cannot be proven. Another extension of the Gabsheim parish church was consecrated in 1768. Regardless of this, the entire building including the tower retained its Gothic character. From the outside it is particularly evident in the mighty choir with its buttresses. Inside, it is the main nave with its fine, coat of arms-adorned vaults that forms the spatial highlight. Significant sculptures in the furnishings (pulpit, baptismal font) and on the outside of the parish church come from various grave slabs of the noble families who were once wealthy here, including the winters of Rüdesheim and especially the knight family Bube von Geispitzheim and Fetzer von Geispitzheim .

Furnishing

The sacrament shrine dates from around 1500. The baptismal font with tracery around 1510.

The church equipment dates from the 18th century and includes monstrance , censers , Incense , traffic lights and chandeliers.

Wooden figures:

  • Risen Christ , 16th century (in the sacristy ).
  • Good Shepherd, around 1730, by Martin Biterich
  • Joh. Nepomuk, around 1730, by Martin Biterich
  • Life-size Saint Alban on a baroque angel console, by Otto Kirsch around 1970.

In the choir there is a tombstone of a Dalberg child († 1564). Outside the choir, tombstones of the knight Bube von Geispitzheim , 14th to 15th century.

War memorial 1914/18, from 1922, extended in 1959.

Around the church is the former cemetery with mainly baroque and classicist tombstones from the 18th and 19th centuries.
