Boat for the incense service

The Incense (lat. Navicula or Naviculum ) or simply "boat" is a in the Catholic and the Anglican Church used vessel in which for use in the liturgy of incense is kept. The incense boat belongs to the Vasa sacra and is therefore blessed before the very first use .

The metal vessel has roughly the shape of a boat with a lid and a stand. The boat comes with a small spoon with which the incense grains for the incens are placed in the censer . The shuttle is carried by an altar boy, the navicular , who accompanies the Thuriferar , who carries the censer, presents the incense to the celebrant or the deacon or, if necessary, refills it himself in between.

In the course of church history, incense boats like other liturgical devices were often artistically designed, made of fine materials and richly decorated.
