Thuriferar

The Thuriferar or thurifer (from Greek. Θύος thýos "incense, incense," lat. Tus (also THUS ) " incense " and ferre "carry") is in the Catholic liturgy an altar boy , the one filled with incense and charcoal censer bears. The expression turibularius (from the Latin turibulum or thuribulum "censer, incense barrel") is also documented for the 13th century .

The Thuriferar gives this to the priest or deacon for incense or incenses the celebrants , the concelebrants , the congregation and also the Eucharistic gifts during the prayer . The Thuriferar is accompanied by a navicular that carries and presents the incense boat. In the processional order, both go at the beginning or at the end of the procession or immediately before the Holy of Holies .

A thuriferar is mainly used in solemn divine services, mostly in high mass , at solemn festivals , at Eucharistic processions , at church funerals or in solemn prayer , especially at Vespers . Since the thuriferar's service is demanding, it is usually performed by older and more experienced acolytes.

Thuriferar and Navikular provide the following services at Holy Mass :

  • Entry procession
  • Altar inks for the opening
  • Gospel procession and incense of the gospel by the deacon or priest
  • Incense of the gifts and the altar in the preparation of the gifts
  • Incense of the main celebrant, the concelebrants and the faithful
  • Incense of the Holy of Holies during prayer
  • Procession
