Philipp von Gmünd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp von Gmünd , called Hünermenger (* before 1482 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1523 ) was a German builder and sculptor. He was one of the most important late Gothic artists on the Middle Rhine .

Life

Philipp von Gmünd was born in Frankfurt and probably learned in the "Bauhütte des Pfarrturm", ie the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew . He came into contact with the work of the cathedral and city architect Madern Gerthener and was stylistically influenced by him.

Philipp can be traced back to Meisenheim since 1482 . Under the successor of Ludwig I of Pfalz-Zweibrücken, called the Black , Duke Alexander , Philipp completed the Meisenheim Church and built the Alexander Church in Zweibrücken. Philipp applied, albeit unsuccessfully, several times for the position of Stadtwerkmeister in Frankfurt. He headed the "Meisenheim School", which under his leadership is attributed to the castle church in Meisenheim, the Alexander church in Zweibrücken and other choir buildings.

Works

Due to missing or lost documents, Philip's authorship for many buildings can only be assumed on the basis of stylistic similarities or stonemason's marks.
